Lori Keeney is the mother of 10-year-old Gavin, who a couple of days ago became her rescuer and hero.
Keeney, who lives with her family in Oklahoma, was enjoying a fun day in the pool with her son, when she suffered a seizure.
It seems, Lori has a health issue- she’s epileptic- and she is prone to seizures, so one of them happened when she was in the pool. And it could have actually cost her life, but she made it out of there alive thanks to her brave boy.
“[Gavin] had just gotten out of the pool and I just went into a seizure,” Keeney told ABC News. “It scared me more than I’ve ever been scared.”
The 10-year-old boy, who was on the porch at the time of the incident, heard splashing and, when he checked more carefully, he realized that his mother was “sinking in the pool”.
The boy rushed to the pool, climbed up the ladder, and dove into the pool, trying to reach for his mom. Soon, he got hold of her, and he dragged her to the side, as she started to regain consciousness.
He managed to hold the woman’s chin up and to keep her head above the pool for more than a minute, until help arrived.
Soon, his grandfather jumped in to help his daughter and grandson.
When Lori realized what had just happened, and when she saw her father next to her, he just fell into his arms.
She explains that she would have drowned if her son had not been there.
“He’s definitely my hero,” she said. “But I really do feel like he’s my guardian angel, as well.”
The Kingston Police Department presented Gavin with an award for saving a life, but- guess what- this is not the first time for the 10-year-old boy.
He has already been awarded for his life-saving skills and his bravery as he has saved his mother’s life again. The first time he saved her from choking, and now this.
How amazing is it that this boy knows how to stay calm and do the right thing when somebody needs his help!
It’s humbling to see a young boy saving his mother’s life twice. We bet that Lori is super proud of him and she feels she has given life to her guardian angel.
And while it is great to see others save lives and praise them for that, it is also crucial that we receive first aid training and that we provide this kind of training to our children. Because, it is obvious that sooner or later, they might save someone’s life.
According to the Red Cross:
“When you understand first aid, you’ll gain the ability to help those in need. This gives them the best opportunity for a positive outcome – and gives you the opportunity to change someone’s life for the better.”
