She didn't know what was happening, but she knew something was very, very wrong.

When we think of all the dangerous stuff that we should be prepared for, they’re always things that give us some warning at first.

Earthquakes, fires, break-ins, shootings, and other similar things.

But what do you do when there’s a threat that you can’t address with a simple “stop, drop, and roll” or “hide under a table”?

What if the danger is something you can’t see?

This 12-year-old found herself having to save her family from the invisible killer that is carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is terrifying. Before long, you’ll all drop like flies, and you won’t even know what happened.

That’s why having someone remain alert and call for help can go a long way.

That role went to Jaziayh Parker.

At only 12 years old, Jaziayh never expected to be in this situation.

Her parents taught her how to call 911 for emergencies, and it’s a good thing they did. Little Jaziayh would end up saving all of them.

It began when her parents and siblings began feeling sick and throwing up. All of them at once.

But they had no fever, and it seemed way too abrupt for the cause to have been viral.

The recording from the department shows the distress in Jaziayh’s voice. “Something wrong with my mama. Can you hurry up and come?”

Carbon monoxide has the numbers to prove that it means business. It causes at least 50,000 emergency hospital visits in the U.S. alone, and it causes anywhere from hundreds to thousands of deaths every year.

And the worst part is that many victims never saw it coming.

It’s not some super rare danger that we don’t have some information on. In fact, the information that we do have makes it a lot scarier.

When the firefighters responded to the urgent call, they already suspected carbon monoxide when they stepped through the doors.

Jaziayh’s brother and sister both vomited and collapsed, and there are few other things in a house that can cause that to happen.

Robby, one of the firefighters, was worried to death about Jaziayh’s family.

He knew they only had minutes based on the severity of what Jaziayh reported. He feared they might not make it in time.

Jaziayh made a world of difference with a single phone call. That little lesson from her mom ended up saving lives.

The firefighters got all of her family out to safety and learned that an idling car caused the leak.

An idling car could be a nuisance when left for a few minutes. When left for a few hours, it becomes a lot more dangerous than you could ever expect.

Jaziayh was given a commendation ceremony by the fire department for her initiative.

And her family learned the hard way that you should always double-check that you didn’t leave the car running. If you start feeling funny and can’t put your finger on why, maybe go outside and check on the car.
