1) The Cookies Taste Differently Depending Where You Are

2) Make New Friends Song

Girl Scouts learn the “Make New Friends” song by the time they are a Daisy, a kindergarten to first grade aged Girl Scout. That’s because making new friends is one of the best parts about being a Girl Scout. Still, it reminds scout to: “Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver. The other is gold.”

3) Elementary School and Beyond

Girls Scouts isn’t just an organization for girls 5 to 12. Middle school Girl Scouts study STEM skills, train as camp counselors and engage in other leadership opportunities. 4) All Girls Welcome

The Girl Scouts of Western Washington refused a $100,000 donation after the donor stipulated that the money not be used to allow transgender girls to join their ranks. The Girl Scouts threw their own fundraiser and tripled that donation. The Girl Scouts of Colorado stepped in when a local troop tried to deny a transgender girl member in 2012 stating a girl would be welcomed into the girls “if a child identifies as a girl and the child’s family presents her as a girl.”

5) More Than 100 Councils

There are more than 113 regional Girl Scout councils, covering the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and overseas troops. Each regional council has the freedom to decide how they want to organize their region and which of the policies and programs they want to implement. 8) Girl Scouting Abroad

The first Girl Scouts Troop outside of the U.S. was in 1925 in Shanghai, China. 9) Fighting For Change

While the Girl Scouts isn’t affiliated with any political parties, they do lobby for change. The Scouts encourage their girls to lobby their representatives on issues that are important to them as individuals and as a troop. Five girls from an Aurora, Colo. troop lobbied for a city ordinance to make smoking or vaping in a car with a minor present punishable by a fine or community service.

10) Girl Scout Swap

Girls Scouts are able to connect with other troops by holdings SWAPS, which stands for Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere. Scouts will make items out of recycled material that can be worn or displayed. They will then share an item they make with every scout they meet from other troops as a show of friendship. Girls are not allowed to refuse a SWAP with another scout.

13) War Time Support

14) Badges for Everything

Girls get badges for all sorts of different things, not just crafts and camping. Scouts can earn a badge for learning about cybersecurity, robotics, and mechanical engineering. They also still earn badges for selling cookies.

16) Cooking Baking to Manufacturing

The original Girl Scouts made their own cookies to sell. They started baking then selling the cookies they made in 1917. A standardized recipe was created by a group leader in 1922. The Chocolate Mint, now known as the Thin Mint, was a favorite by the 1950s. Now Girl Scout cookies are commercially baked.

17) No Sashes to Sashes

The Girl Scouts famous sashes weren’t always a staple of the Girl Scout uniform. The original Girl Scouts had wide-brimmed hats, then berets and beanies. But the girls can now wear whatever they want with either their sash, tunic or vest over it. And those pieces are, of course, covered in badges.

18) Girl Scouts and Incarcerated Mothers

The Girl Scouts always encouraged moms to stay in touch with their daughters, even if they were incarcerated. The Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program provides resources for daughters to continue to be in contact with their mothers who are in jail. 19) Famous Faces

More than 59 million women in the U.S. have been in Girl Scouts. And that includes a lot of famous faces. Some of those faces include Hillary Clinton, Venus and Serena Williams, and Madeleine Albright. In addition. In fact, about 75 percent of female U.S. senators and 53 percent of female U.S. representatives were in the Girl Scouts.

20) Paying Tribute to the Founder

Many institutions have paid tribute to Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low. The U.S. Post Office created a stamp of her in 1948, 21 years after her death. Madame Tussaud’s wax museum also made a wax likeness of her to celebrate the Girl Scouts’ centennial anniversary.

21) Positive Physical Boundaries

The Girl Scouts make sure to tell their girls about having positive physical boundaries. This is done to teach kids about consent and making sure they are confident with creating boundaries for themselves. An example of teaching this is not forcing your child to hug anyone they don’t want to, even if it’s a relative. This way they don’t feel like they owe people physical affection.

Making a child give out a hug to show her appreciation for a holiday gift can set the stage for her questioning whether or not she "owes" another person physical affection following a nice gesture.

23) The Gold Award

The Gold Award is the highest award you can achieve as a Girl Scout. In order to achieve your Gold Award, Girl Scouts must select and issue, research it, and make a plan to solve or help the issue, and then implement their plan. Gold Award projects have included helping foster kids to connect with their biological parents and investigating infant mortality in Africa. Gold Awards help girls win scholarships, college admission, and career opportunities.

24) Girl Scout Camp for All Girls

You don’t have to be a Girl Scout to go to a Girl Scout camp. All girls are welcome at Girl Scout camps. Girls are also welcome to join international Girl Scout camps.

25) Religion or No Religion… Take Your Pick

Girl Scouts vow to “serve God and my country” in the Girl Scout Promise. But they allow their scouts to substitute any word they want for God or leave it out altogether. These accommodations have allowed the Girl Scouts to keep their membership diverse. Girls can also earn a My Promise, My Faith pin by applying the Girl Scout Law to their own faith.
