If there’s one word to describe this family, it would be grateful.
They’re grateful to have family and to be alive, surrounded by so much love and kindness.
The Haupt family is made up of five people, Greg (the dad), Megan (the mom), and siblings, Jane, Max, and Henry.
Greg and Megan love their family with all their heart.
In fact, Greg wrote a song called “Three Six Nine, Loves of Mine,” where he described how much he loves each of his children.
The numbers three, six, and nine represent the age at the time when he wrote the song.
This song would turn out to be a great reminder and memory of Greg for the three children.
Greg wrote this song shortly after he was diagnosed with colon cancer.
Months later, he passed away.
And if that wasn’t hard enough, four months after Greg’s passing, their mother, Megan, passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition.
One second, she was talking to her brother-in-law in her home while the children played upstairs.
The next second, she had a cardiac arrest and passed at the age of 40.
Krista Lieber is Megan’s twin sister. She was the one who broke the news to the children.
“Henry had tears right away. Um. I just told him, you know, ‘We’re just gonna be a bigger family now. And we’re going to be here for you. And I want you to know you’re never going to be alone, ever. You’re going to be taken care of,'” Krista shared.
Without hesitation, Krista and her husband, Dave, took in the three children to raise as their own alongside their own children.
They even adopted the Haupt family dog.
What the three children went through in less than a year is heartbreaking and traumatizing.
And the couple is determined to give them a good life.
Although it is heartbreaking, they are also grateful for the message their deaths have sent.
Krista and Dave are now more health conscious and they are mindful of the health choices they are making for themselves and their growing family.
In fact, Dave and Krista had themselves checked and were glad they did.
Dave was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease so that means he needs to be careful of his nutrition.
Krista’s diagnosis was an eye-opener.
She said that she had been experiencing heart palpitations and shortness of breath since the pandemic started.
At first, she thought they were anxiety attacks because of what was happening in the world.
When her twin sister died, she realized she needed to get herself checked. And she was glad she did.
Krista was diagnosed with Long QT syndrome, a heart condition that can cause fainting, seizures, and sudden death.
This was most likely what happened to Megan.
“My sister saved my life. Her death was not in vain. There is a bigger picture here. She might have left to go be with Greg, but she also left behind a big stay with my children,” Krista shared. “Check on them, make sure you’re okay. Make sure they are okay. That is how I feel.”
Although Krista’s family has grown twice as big, it hasn’t been a big challenge for them.
They say it takes a village to raise a child.
In this case, their extended family and their local community have been helping them with what they need to get through each day.
“Some people would do something as small as helping with the cat. Other people donated, you know, lots of money. There was nothing too small and nothing too big. And it all added together to like, be this kind of unified front of stability for the kids,” Krista explained.
They even get calls from strangers asking how they can help.
Jane, Max, and Henry’s parents may be gone now but their family got even bigger.
