Superheroes live among us all. Some people and professions entail saving lives every day. We heard stories about police officers, firefighters, and doctors going out of their way to save others. Even ordinary citizens doing ordinary things can be life-saving for others.
But when we think about kids, we think they’re too young to do all that. All they care about is fun and play-pretend with their superhero costumes. Little did we know that these little humans could save others in magnanimous ways.
Mars and superheroes
Mars Bedell loved superheroes. He had lots of costumes and masks for every superhero out there – yes, including PJ Masks. It was like he was meant to save the world.
“Anything that had to do with being a superhero, he loved. He loved to dress up as a superhero every day. He always wanted to go out in his superhero gear,” Mars’ mother told KHOU 11.
His mother imagined that his little boy would grow up and get a profession that entails saving others; he would grow up to be a superhero. But all that was washed away by a tragic incident.
Drowned his hopes and dreams
July 3 was a horrific day for Mars’ mom as he was found floating in one of the pools in Baystone Apartment in Webster, Texas. They rushed him to HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, hoping he could recover.
The young boy fought for dear life but succumbed to death on July 5. This terribly devastated his family. He was well-loved, and nobody wanted to see his dreams of becoming a hero drown just like that.
Another chance to save lives
His mother believed that Mars’ life was meant to have a purpose – that he was meant to save lives. With him gone, there was one way she thought that his son could be an instrument of hope.
The family decided to donate Mars’ organs to extend his life by giving them to others. His mother knew that he would be proud of this decision and that it was the best way to honor him.
Mars’ Honor Walk
Hospitals often conduct the Honor Walk, a short ceremony where they wheel the patient from their assigned room to the operating room for the procedure. The walk was meant to honor the dearly departed’s life and thank their selflessness by donating their organs.
Mars’ Honor Walk showed how the hospital staff adored this little boy. They all donned capes, masks, and some with superhero costumes. They bade him goodbye with a silent prayer and thanksgiving all while trying to hide their tears.
Saving lives until the end
Mars’ mother believed that while her beloved son was now gone, his legacy lived on. She will never forget his kind heart and wonderful life through others.
According to LifeGift External Relations Vice President Lauren Quinn:
“He was able to live on through others. He helped save four people’s lives. He was able to donate his heart, his liver, and both of his kidneys went to two separate patients.”
Until the very end, Mars was a hero even at his young age.
