Sawyer Incontro was only a kindergarten student when his parents explained to him what an emergency is and how he is supposed to react when and if the time ever comes.
Danielle and her husband taught their son from a very young age how to react in an emergency situation. In other words, stay calm and call 911.
And this is exactly what Sawyer did when, a few years ago, he was at home alone with his pregnant mother and he realized that she had passed out.
You see, when the boy was six, his mother got pregnant. Due to two different conditions Danielle had, she could easily lose consciousness suddenly.
That’s part of why the parents talked to their first-born about emergencies, and they even taped their address on the fridge in case they boy ever needed to share it with the emergency services.
Indeed, one day, while Sawyer was playing with Legos, at some point he realized his mom was not there anymore.
Danielle wanted to use the restroom, so she left for a moment, but she lost consciousness in the bathroom and fell on the floor.
“Sawyer was playing Legos when his pregnant mother got up to use the restroom,” Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi told reporters. “She got up too quickly, became dizzy and blacked out.”
Liuckily, the little boy knew exactly what to do in that case. He grabbed the phone and called 911, determined to save his mother’s and unborn sister’s lives.
“He stayed nice and calm, totally relaxed and just told the firefighter paramedics, ‘My mommy’s back here,'” Concialdi shared.
Danielle remained unconscious for several minutes, until the paramedics arrived.
When she regained consciousness, she couldn’t remember passing out or falling on the floor, she was just confused by all the people surrounding her.
“I just remember waking up on my stomach,” Danielle told CBS Los Angeles, “and there were firefighters and police everywhere.”
Thanks to this little hero’s quick thinking and calmness, the pregnant mother was soon fine enough to be released from the hospital.
Danielle is really proud of her son, and Sawyer is also proud of himself and happy that his mother taught him what to do in an emergency.
As Concialdi said,
“Best things for parents to teach kids in an emergency situation is to stay calm and call 9-1-1. The dispatcher will answer and talk to them until help arrives.”
Indeed, experts encourage parents to teach their kids this kind of life skills because one day they may save someone’s life.
It is important for young kids to know how to react when someone has a medical emergency, how to seek help when they are lost in a public place, and first aid.
They also need to learn when it is crucial to remain calm, and when to scream, while they should be taught to never give out personal information.
All these skills may one day save their life or that of a loved one.
