Birth is commonly described as a miracle because—let’s face it—the entire process is pretty incredible. All human beings begin as tiny cells, one each from our mother and father, which combine to create a unique set of genetic instructions which result in each one of us. Still, while the process is easy to romanticize, it’s easy to forget how much complex work a woman’s body has to put in to make a child. While this process usually takes nine months, there’s a video circulating that condenses that time frame to only four minutes.
Everything begins in a familiar way, with many sperm competing to make it to the egg. When they finally get there, one finally makes it inside and combines its genetic information with that of the egg. The egg then makes its way down the fallopian tube and implants itself safely in the walls of the woman’s uterus. Still, this is all only the most preliminary of stages—this is where the work begins.
As the video shows, even before we’re truly human we’re beginning to grow tiny bones, tiny organs and other complex organs. A little after that, the synaptic networks in our brains are starting to take form. Our little hearts are beating. Though it’s easy to think of a pregnancy as just growing a human body up to size, this video shows the reality of it: all the complexity of a full grown human being is coming together in miniature.
While we get bigger and bigger, we grow into our limbs and appendages, our fingers and toes get more coordinated and we become more active in the womb. Our bodies and brains are ready for life on the outside. When that happens, next begins the actual process of birth. Even though we’re not telling you anything you don’t know, believe us when we say this video will completely blow your mind. Pregnancy has never been quite so inspiring—or so epic.
Above all, this clip is a mindful reminder of all of life’s incredible mysteries that we take for granted. Every one of us started as just a tiny cluster of cells in our mothers’ bodies, only to become the vibrant people we are today. We forget how much work we had to do to even be here in the first place, but this video is a perfect reminder. We’ll let you discover it for yourself (and don’t be surprised if you end up rewatching).
