We often wonder how a mother feels when she has to give up her baby for adoption. We can go through her way of thought and discover what made her make such a decision.
We talk about financial hardship, abusive relationships, drug addiction, or even social reasons, and try to find out how hard it must have been for them to give up their newborn.
Fathers’ feelings are more rarely discussed, maybe because they are often absent or one of the reasons that adoption looks unavoidable.
But what really needs to be analyzed is how the adoptee feels.
Whether you’re a child or an adult when you find out the truth, discovering that your family is not where you were meant to belong initially can make you feel perplexed and frustrated.
“Most adoptees are happy to be adopted and to have their adoptive parents in their lives,” experts agree. “Despite their happiness, though, adult adoptees still feel hurt. Hurt that their birth parents did not or could not raise them.”
When Donna Freed found out at a young age that she was adopted, her whole world collapsed.
“It did come as a huge shock,” she told TODAY. “And it wasn’t that I was given up, for me the wrench was that I wasn’t my parents’.”
The woman just couldn’t believe that her family had kept such a secret from her, although her adoptive mother told her that it was never a secret.
At least, finding that out was an explanation of why Donna didn’t look like any of her family members.
“I just hadn’t met anyone that actually looks like me and so I saw the actress Judy Davis, and I thought ‘Oh, great! She looks like me, she could be my mother!'”
In fact, the truth was far from that. Although her biological mother was, in a way, famous, she was not a celebrity.
When Donna’s mother died from lymphoma, the woman, in her early 40s at the time, decided that the time had come for her to set out to find her biological parents.
After a long journey, she found out that her parents had”the biggest secret ever”, as she put it.
Donna knew what her real last name was, and she also knew that her birth parents had something to do with fraud, so after deep research, she found out that her mother had faked her death.
“My father was married with children and was having an affair with my mother,” she explained. “They were going to run away to Spain with me to raise me, and they didn’t have any money.”
In order for the couple to raise the money they needed to leave for Europe, the couple faked the woman’s death by drowning to get the insurance money for accidental death.
However, they were caught and, although her mother did not do any time, her father did go to prison because he had already been charged with fraud numerous times before.
When the woman found out where her biological mother lived, she visited her and was happy to finally see someone that really looked like her.
The incredible story was narrated by Freed and you can watch it by clicking on the video below.
