Dealing with pregnancy and giving birth is tough stuff. But the swollen ankles, back aches, and unbearable pain are well worth it if you ask most moms.
But what if you had to deliver your own baby?
Not only do you have to carry around a human being inside of you for 9 months and go through the worst pain of your life to deliver it, but you also have to morph into a midwife or doctor whose is supposed to be calm and in charge.
Sounds like a cruel joke, or the beginning of a nightmare, but that was one Florida woman’s reality this week when Hurricane Irma hit. Cara Kesling (who deserves a damn medal, a congratulatory ceremony, and possibly a statue erected in her honor) had likely prepared to give birth in a hospital.
However, the Miami Herald reports that Hurricane Irma prevented an ambulance from driving out to her when she went into labor. She called for an ambulance around 3:23 a.m. but the emergency crews were tied up with other calls caused by the storm. Kesling called again at 5:35 a.m. when she was ready to give birth
Crews were overwhelmed with calls and deemed it the weather was deemed unsafe to respond to.
Kesling had no choice but to get on a conference call with local emergency responders to walk her through the birthing process.
“We weren’t able to respond. So she delivered the placenta, also. Dispatch told her how to tie it off. She’s stable at home,” Assistant Fire Chief Eloy Garica told the Miami Herald.
Welcome to the world baby Nayiri Storm! Glad our officers were able to assist the family safely from hospital to hotel. #PerfectName pic.twitter.com/Cun2wKmwQ2

No hospital bed, sanitary gown, no crew full of doctors and nurses surrounding her. Just her and whoever else was home with her. A paramedic, dispatcher, and a doctor talked this woman through delivering her baby, the placenta, and cutting the umbilical cord.
And she didn’t get an epidural. This woman is BAD ASS!
I can’t imagine how scary that must have been for her but she was able to safely deliver a healthy baby girl. The mother and newborn were later taken to the hospital by emergency workers that morning.
The Miami-Dade Police Department later posted photos of the newborn girl who they said had the “perfect name.” Her name is Nayiri Storm. Now that is a bad ass name for a girl born of a bad ass momma.
