Sesame Street is one of the longest-running children’s TV series of all time, which obviously means that, whether you love it or hate it, it’s doing something right.
The show is packed full of long-time character favorites like Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, and, of course, Elmo. Having aired its first episode in 1969, the show has recently passed its 50th birthday.
Though it might seem like a fairly surface-level TV show, Sesame Street has had some defining moments over the years.
Episodes of Sesame Street have consistently pushed the boundaries of what was “acceptable” to show to children at the time, with episodes on divorce and death, obesity, and homelessness.
Most of us are familiar with the lively, cheery tune that opens Sesame Street. If you’re a parent, this tune has probably been stuck in your head for more hours than you care to remember.
But, annoying as it may be to you, the Sesame Street opening tune captures a child’s attention like no other.
One baby, Ellie May, loves Sesame Street more than any other little girl her age. Her dad, Joe, noticed how Ellie May’s face lit up when the Elmo’s World theme tune began, and he knew this was too special to keep to himself.
So Joe shared a video of him and his little girl watching the opening of the show together – and it’s the sweetest thing we’ve ever seen.
The video begins with Joe saying,
“You’re now about to witness the strength of Sesame Street knowledge.”
With Ellie May sitting on his knee, he presses play on his computer, and the Sesame Street song begins to play.
Within seconds, Ellie May’s face turns from impartial to shocked, and quickly, her gasp of surprise turns to joy.
She grins at the screen, looking in awe at what she can see in front of her. Elmo has caught her attention, and she can’t take her eyes off him for a single second.
Dad Joe smiles and chuckles at Ellie May’s reaction, which is just too darn infectious to do otherwise. We feel as if our expressions watching Ellie May are exactly the same as her own while she watches Elmo.
Even when the theme tune ends, Ellie May continues to stare, captivated, at the screen, and smiles every time Elmo says something.
It’s one of the cutest baby reactions we’ve seen in a long time, and the internet audience agrees.
The video, which was posted in November 2017, currently has more than 4 million views and 5,000 comments.
Many people commented to express how adorable Joe’s baby girl is, with one person writing:
“I failed, couldn’t help myself. What an adorable child. Bless her little heart. I was smiling from ear to ear.”
Someone else wrote:
“She looks like her daddy! The pureness of babies! How beautiful to see daughter & daddy together like that!”
During COVID, when more people have taken to the internet for some positivity than ever before, Ellie May’s video resurfaced again. Joe, Ellie May’s dad, commented in September:
“FOUR MILLION VIEWS!!!!!! HOLY COW THIS IS CRAZY!!”
Crazy as it may seem to Joe, who probably feels like a normal dad just doing his best, his video went viral for all the right reasons. Little Ellie May’s adorable smile is infectious, and the video is something we could all do with seeing when we need cheering up.
