Raising a child is hard work and requires a lot of patience. As adults, it’s hard to imagine what the world was like when we were children—and it’s even harder to imagine what it was like for our parents who raised us. In addition to feeding and caring for us, there’s also the simpler concern of how to comfort us. Although keeping us quiet and happy is one thing during the day, it’s quite another at night. After all, parents need their sleep just like we do!

One British mother discovered a novel way to keep her daughter calm throughout the night and posted it online.

Laura Gerson was having trouble getting her 11-month-old daughter Amelie to sleep soundly.

After putting her mind to it, she worked the problem out. Although Amelia was satisfied when she had her pacifier (or her “dummy,” as their family calls it), she often dropped it or lost it—and lots of crying would ensue. During the day this wasn’t too much of a problem, though at night it became a more serious issue. Every time Amelia would lose her pacifier, Gerson would have to wake up, find it and soothe her child back to sleep.

That’s when Gerson figured it out: what if there plenty of extra pacifiers in the crib for Amelia to grab?

After trying out the trick, Gerson saw that her parenting hack had worked like a charm.

By leaving more than 10 pacifiers in Amelia’s crib, both of them were able to sleep soundly and without any interruptions! Gerson was quick to share her wisdom with The Motherload, an online parenting group based out of the United Kingdom:

“Weird bedtime routine that’s worked… Lol. Since my little one was about 3 months old she’s gone to bed with roughly 10 dummies in with her. Found that when she cried of a night all she wanted was a dummy then she’d go back off. Realised that if she had one to hand then she would just find it of a night, trial and error with her losing a few down the side but 99% of the time she feels around, finds a dummy, sticks it in and she’s sorted! Haven’t had to go into her of a night for about 8 months now… WINNING!! I don’t even wanna think about the time when the “Dummy Fairy” comes to take them away though.”
