When we are babies, our brains are working overtime.
Though we take things like walking and talking for granted as adults, the truth is that these are complex, executive processes that require some serious practice to master. To get along in life, we need to be able to get around, care for ourselves and get along with those around us. When we see babies gurgling and making unintelligible sounds, they’re probably just using their brains to work things out.
Something like that was the case for baby Oliver in this story.
Oliver and his family are behind the YouTube channel For the ORB, a parenting and family channel.
In the videos, the adventures of the adorable baby Oliver are documented day by day, month by month. In one of the earliest entries, Oliver’s dad got a firsthand look at some of the mental processing that being a baby entails. More specifically, the special moment happened as Oliver seemed to be having a dream and was waking up from it.
Once Oliver was fully conscious, his dad started asking him some questions—and the results were adorable.
After Oliver wakes up, Dad asks him: “Good morning! Did you sleep well?”
Although Oliver can’t speak yet, his facial expressions are worth 1000 words. At first, Oliver fusses a little bit before centering on his dad. At that moment, his expression harshens a little. Then, his eyes open—wide. After holding this for long enough to get the point across, his face melts into a knowing, sly smile. “Nice,” his dad replies.
Still, baby Oliver isn’t done.
After that exchange, Oliver rifles through a few more emotions.
Next up is fear or alarm which immediately transitions into something resembling anger. “Oh, a mean look,” his dad says. After being recognized, Oliver’s face melts yet again back into a cheerful smile. For anyone who has seen the video already, it’s easy to see its appeal.
The video was uploaded to YouTube where it has amassed more than nine million views.
Above all, this adorable video of Oliver captures that unique learning process that babies have to go through while they’re mastering the world around them. In addition to trying on new behaviors, they often have to try on new emotions to figure out how to act in certain situations. Fortunately, dad was rolling the camera when it happened here. Nice going, dad!
