We’ve all heard the horror stories of stepparents wreaking havoc on their stepchildren’s lives.
Or sometimes, it’s the other way around. Stepchildren would ruin their stepparent’s life, which leads to divorce.
And then there are heart-warming stories of stepparents being the best parent to their stepchild.
That’s what twin sisters, Julianna and Gabby Ruvolo, feel about their stepmom, Becky.
In fact, they don’t even consider her a stepmom. As far as they’re concerned, Becky is their mom period.
Their dad, Pete, started dating Becky in 2010 when they were about eight years old. Becky and the girls met a few months after and Becky was nervous.
And so was Pete!
“That meeting was way more important for me because if they didn’t get along or it didn’t work out, I didn’t know what I was going to do,” Pete told GMA. “Because the girls always come first.”
Talk about pressure! But Becky was ready to take the plunge. And so were the girls.
“When I met the girls, I was very nervous, but we hit it off and they were 8 years old at the time. And it kind of just snowballed and flowed from there into our family,” Becky shared.
The girls agreed there was an instant connection.
“We were already calling her mom because it felt so natural,” Gabby added. “We met as friends and then she became mom and it was just, from the start, it was like love at first sight.”
Julianna echoed what her sister said.
“We always went to her as we would a mom. She was always there for us,” Julianna shared.
And when Becky and Pete got married in 2013, she had a special message for Julianna and Gabby during their wedding ceremony.
“I wanted to tell them we’re coming together. I will always be there for you,” Becky said.
Since then, their relationship kept getting better and better. And Becky was the first one to cheer them on in everything.
Julianna and Gabby’s birth mom was not in the picture but the girls never felt they lacked a mother’s love because of Becky.
They’ve wanted to ask Becky to adopt them for so long but weren’t sure when to do it.
“We figured like, what’s the best time to ask the biggest question we will probably ever ask? And why not make it on Mother’s Day? Ask our mom to officially be our mother on the day dedicated to her,” Julianna told GMA.
And so they gave her a special gift. It was a photo book of their great memories together with a special question on the last page.
“Mom, will you adopt us?” they asked with a photo of the three of them.
Of course Pete was in on the surprise, especially since they already had papers drawn to start the adoption process.
“To actually see it unfold, just filled me with such a feeling of pride, proud for my girls and for my wife. I know how happy that would make her and it really was such a special moment,” Peter shared.
