What is your first thought when you hear the sirens of a police vehicle near you?
Is it relief that they are there to save the day, or fear that they are coming to harass you?
For one woman, Lisa Medinnus of Austin, Texas, her first thought was “Not today!”
Lisa was just on her way home from taking her 2-year-old daughter to the dentist when she heard the sirens of a police cruiser behind her.
She had been pushing the child’s stroller on the side of a busy highway, Frontage Rd, when she stopped for the officer.
“I don’t need this, I don’t need an officer giving me a hard time, or much less a ticket.”
But that was not Officer Jason Borne’s intention when he stopped the woman.
He was worried about her and said the station had received multiple calls about a woman pushing a stroller down the road, he was surprised to actually see it with his own eyes though.
The woman explained that she couldn’t afford a car, or even an Uber, to get her to and from her appointments.
Officer Borne recommended she get an all-terrain stroller, that way it would be easier to push it on the grass instead of having to be right out on the road.
He quickly realized that his suggestion was useless though, if the woman was struggling with bills, buying an expensive new stroller was definitely out of the question.
“Will you let me give you an all-terrain stroller?” the officer asked, “I can bring it to you tomorrow.”
Lisa gladly accepted the offer and when the next day rolled around, Officer Borne did indeed bring her a new stroller.
Ever since them, Lisa does not consider him just a police officer, but an angel as well.
“He’s Officer Borne,” Lisa told FOX 7 Austin. “But he’s also Jason Borne. He’s our angel and he’s our friend.”
A few days after their first meeting, Officer Borne went out of his way again and showed up to the Medinnus’s apartment with his SUV packed full of toys and care supplies for the mother and her daughter.
He also started a GoFundMe page and relayed to people the situation.
He said that, unfortunately, Lisa was stuck in an endless catch-22 cycle of needing a job, a car, and childcare, but wasn’t able to do any of those things without the others.
“She has this world of an overwhelming situation,” the officer said when creating his GoFundMe video, “she needs a hand to help get up and out of this hole.”
The GoFundMe page raised over $29,000 for the mother and her child, an incredible and life-changing amount surely.
Officer Borne reminds people that, behind his badge, he is still a real person; he has a wife and kids and wanted to help this woman and her daughter out of the goodness of his heart.
