It all started when he met Alba, she’s a baby girl who was born with Down syndrome.

She had a rough start in life from day 1, this little princess had been in a predicament brought by her condition.

But right when Luca held the poor girl in his arms, he knew deep down in his heart that he was meant to be the father of the abandoned child.

Sadly, even her direct family didn’t want her. She was put up for adoption and was heartlessly rejected by no less than 20 families!

It’s true that adopting a child with special needs is difficult but to be rejected by that much, it’s heart-wrenching if I may say.

Things changed when Luca came into her life.

Everything beautiful started to happen when Alba met Luca.

After being passed from one family to another, not knowing why she had to be with different people, the kindhearted man made her feel she was loved. He fell in love right away since seeing someone with such a condition was not new to him.

He had a wide experience with volunteering in countless social service programs, one of which was “A Ruota Libera” Foundation, a group that provides assistance to children with Down syndrome.

“Since I was 14 years old, I have volunteered and worked with the disabled so I felt I had the right knowledge and experience to do it,” he said.

Luca found no difference at all when he took care of Alba. Each of them was special, especially her because she was about to be his legally adopted child.

However, the process of adopting her wasn’t easy.

Luca didn’t shy away from letting them know that he was a homosexual man. Unlike “traditional” families, they didn’t see Luca as a good candidate to be Alba’s parent because of his sexuality.

But isn’t he admirable? He’s ready to become a father to a child with a disability. Something that no one among those 20 families was ready to offer Alba. For the record, he’s willing to be a solo parent.

“For me, a disabled child is not a second choice solution, but a conscious choice with respect to my vocation and my abilities,” he said.

Fortunately, after the long adoption process, Luca successfully became Alba’s legal parent. To him, that precious moment of victory was priceless!

He didn’t make Alba’s life better, it’s the other way around.

Life became much brighter ever since he adopted Alba. They made each other’s days happier and Luca couldn’t be more thankful for how things have turned out for them both.

Unlike before, people with Down syndrome are now living more freely. In fact, according to a study published by the American Journal of Medical Genetics, families living with a person with Down syndrome tend to be happier in their lives.
