It’s a common scenario – a young man goes to pick up his date, only to be met by her dad at the front door for a total grilling.
You don’t even have to of experienced it yourself to know the situation could cause, nervousness, sweats, and a desire to flee (even for the daughter)!
One would think that if a dad weren’t home prior to the date, all parties could count their lucky stars and be on their way. But that was before the Ring Video Doorbell…
Now, parents can make that front door meeting completely awkward without even being at home. Just like one Massachusetts father managed to do after a guy came to pick up his daughter for a date. Luckily, the hilarious footage was shared online!
Just a dad trying to look out for his family’s safety.
Pedro Lugo is a husband and the father of four. Since he has to work every day from morning until night, he decided to get a Ring Video Doorbell for “peace of mind.”
One day, Pedro’s 19-year-old daughter Grace informed him she was gonna go out on a date. Like any dad who doesn’t want to see his baby grow up – his initial reaction was, “No you’re not.” It would be his daughter’s first date, and since he had to work, he wouldn’t be able to meet the guy.
But then Pedro had an idea… He told Ring:
“I said, ‘Make sure he rings the doorbell,’ but I didn’t tell her why. She had no idea I was going to interrogate him the way I did.”
Ding, dong. Guess who?
A young man named Jared rang the Lugo family’s doorbell. Yet, instead of being met by an actual “person” – Jared was met by a male voice…
In the clip, Pedro introduces himself as Grace’s dad through the Ring system. He then tells his daughter’s date:
“Sorry I can’t meet you in person because I’m at work. So at least I still get to see your face, but you don’t get to see mine…”
Pedro’s laughter that follows should have been a clue to Jared that he was headed for the hot seat!
Dad wants details.
Pedro starts asking some of the normal questions that would be on a parent’s list, like where are you going, and what time will you be home. Jared lets him know that they’re planning on eating at the Roadhouse, then going to see the movie Toy Story. As for what time they’ll be back – before 11.
Dad Pedro hilariously responds:
“Oh, I heard 10:30. Okay, that’s good.”
Jared seems like a good guy and assures Pedro he’ll treat his daughter well. However, it doesn’t stop Dad from making things uncomfortable.
He tells Jared, “Alright, I got a good picture of you.” Pedro then warns them:
“And remember, I know people everywhere. So they’re looking. They’re looking at what you’re doing.”
Poor Jared. You still got time to run, kid!
Grace goes back and forth on curfew time with her dad, and Pedro even tries to calculate the movie timing. He stays firm on 10:30.
The teen seems embarrassed by how her dad is behaving – but something tells me she’s very used to his protectiveness!
Just before they have a chance to escape, Dad has one last thing.
He says:
“Hey, go take a picture of his license plate.”
If Jared wasn’t shaking in his boots already, there’s no doubt he was at that point.
Thanks to his doorbell camera, Pedro even got to see Jared acting like a gentleman.
After Grace’s date opens her car door for her – the dad yells out, “Good job on opening the door for her!”
It’s a funny first date meeting that’s been watched over 3.7 million times.
So, did Jared get her home on time? Pedro reported to Ring that he had Grace home at 10:18 that night (phew). Although Jared was nervous after the front door meeting, he ended up taking Grace out on a date the next day!
Eventually, Pedro and Jared had a chance to actually meet in person. The dad said:
“He’s a very respectful kid. And he told me he kept looking at his watch the whole time during that first date to make sure he got her home before 10:30.”
