We’ve all seen them floating around on the internet.
Those videos where little kids see their parents with drastically different appearances, like a haircut or a good shave, and they freak out.
Poor kids. Everyone around them is hysterical laughing, while they sit there terrified and confused.
According to Daddy Rookies, there are a few reasons for this, some of which may depend on what age they are.
First, reason relates to a beard and what it may represent.
“Beards have been said to have the effect of assuring babies that they are well protected and in safe hands. This would therefore explain the reactions that babies make when their fathers shave off their beards.”
Babies and small children also just aren’t good with change and become upset when they see dad shave because they are confused.
“Another reason behind the reaction of most babies after their dads shave is the fact that babies at a young age are not yet accustomed to the concept of change. Their expectations are therefore that people remain the same from day to day and when this does not happen then it becomes very confusing to them.”
In this example, a baby will recognize their newly-shaved dad but are just confused by the change.
“This is because infants can determine human faces better than objects. It will be a lot to take in for the baby as the dad smells, feels, and sounds the same but looks different. As a result, the baby may take a while to process this newly obtained information.”
Apparently, babies can eventually learn to associate certain striking features about individuals, including their parents’ eye color.
But that takes a little while.
At first, young babies can only see in shadows and contrast.
“What babies see at this tender age is shadows and contrast, hence why black and white images are good for babies up to a certain age. Therefore when learning how to recognize faces babies work from the light and dark point of view. Shaving one’s beard is therefore to the effect that your baby might not even recognize you!”
It seems as if the former was true for Little Ruby Anne because she seemed downright confused when her daddy revealed his new no-beard face.
“Wait for it,” her dad David writes in the caption the video of her reaction. “Little Ruby Anne is not happy that daddy shaved his beard! She studied him for quite some time and then made her decision that she did NOT like it! And don’t worry! She is fine! 10 minutes later she was totally fine and loving daddy again!”
The video starts off with her bearded Daddy singing to her.
“Jesus loves the little children. All the children of the world. Red, yellow, black, and white, they are precious in his sight,” he sings.
Ruby Anne is looking adorable in a pretty pink dress and gold headband. She’s very happy listening to her Daddy sing.
Next, we see Dad with a towel wrapped around the bottom of his face. She’s already suspicious looking at Mom who is filming like, “The Hell is going on here?”
David calls his daughter’s name she looks at him again. He whips off the towel to reveal his newly clean-shaven face and just stares.
“Hi Baby,” he says. She still stares. She’s just starring at him.
“Hi honey, it’s Daddy,” he tells her.
But she isn’t so sure. She’s just looking at him all suspect. He gives her face a few kisses and then she starts to cry. She doesn’t know what’s going on and she’s not having it. And who can blame her? Check out this cutie’s hilarious reaction in the video below.
