Summer is a glorious time. Children race from their classrooms, throwing school supplies with reckless abandon. Now is the time for adventure and fun, the time they’ve been waiting for all year.
As with most things, however, it comes to an end.
Once August rolls around, the inflatable pool and summer toys are brought inside to linger for another ten months. Children’s carefree giggles are replaced by high-pitched voices whining, “I don’t want to go to school!” Despite their pleas of protest and promises of obedience, like death and taxes, the first day of school is something they can’t avoid.
The end of summer had come and gone for this family, who was preparing to send their kids off on their first day of school. The children’s wardrobes had already been replenished with nice, new outfits and their pencil cases had been stuffed full of pencils, pointy and sharp. Despite the kids’ nervousness and apprehension, the time for school had arrived.
In this video, recorded by the father, you see the children being given the traditional send-off as they get on the bus.
The mother, clad in jeans and a blue T-shirt, gives the kids their final goodbye. It’s the classic coming-of-age moment, and she takes a few photos of the kids on the bus steps to commemorate it all. The dad zooms in on the children making their way towards the end of the bus.
But, when the bus starts driving away, he turns the camera to reveal a hysterical reaction.
“Whooohooohooohooohooo!” the father yells, running through the yard like a kid in a candy shop.
For kids, the freedom is ending— but for the adults, it has just begun!
Some may describe the father’s reaction as over-the-top, but it’s an emotion that many parents can relate to. When kids are in school, we have the freedom to do whatever we want without feeling guilty about entertaining them. A few years ago, the Huffington Post compiled a list of tweets. Each one was about children going back-to-school— and each expressed sentiments similar to the father in the video:
