Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn fatally stabbed Gypsy’s mother. Dee Dee Blanchard. And Rod Blanchard says that his ex-wife got exactly what she deserved.
That’s because she mentally and physically tortured their daughter for more than a decade for financial gain.
Dee Dee told her daughter and others that Gypsy was terminally ill. That she had had leukemia as a child, muscular dystrophy, and several other chronic diseases. She forced her daughter to use a walker and then confined her to a wheelchair.
But it was all a lie.
Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen by proxy, a rare form of abuse where a guardian exaggerates or induces illness in a child for attention, sympathy or affection.
Dee Dee told people her daughter was younger and both induced and exaggerated her illnesses.
She shaved her daughter’s head, gave her daughter medication that made her teeth fall out, and put her on a feeding tube even though she didn’t need any of that. And Gypsy was completely clueless, she just believed everything her mom told her as a child.
Dee Dee would freak out if she caught Gypsy walking without her walker or wheelchair.
“She got so upset with me she would punish me so bad she started hitting me with a coat hanger and telling me all kinds of mean things. She would tell me she wished she had an abortion when she had the chance,” Gypsy said in an interview with The Dr. Phil Show. “That I ruined her life that I have no idea how hard it is to keep up everything she built.”
Dee Dee was able to get away with all this by moving, isolating herself from family and friends, and constantly switching doctors.
In return, Dee Dee and Gypsy got a free home from Habitat for Humanity, trips, visits from celebrities like Miranda Lambert, and other charitable donations by duping her neighbors and several charities across the country.
“I had my doubts,” Ron told People. “But I mean, you’re staying at Ronald McDonald house, staying at this hospital for a week. … How do you question that?”
Ron was rarely allowed to see his daughter and had to call days in advance. Dee Dee wouldn’t leave her daughter’s side during visits.
As Gypsy entered her 20s she started to catch on to what her mother was doing and began a romantic relationship online.
Gypsy tried to escape several times, according to Wikipedia, but those efforts were thwarted by her mother. Eventually Gypsy and Godejohn plotted to kill Dee Dee and did. Listen to Gypsy tell her tragic story in the video below.
