Tracy Harrell is the owner of the Randleman Enrichment Center, a daycare center in Randleman, North Carolina. She accompanied police officers while they conducted a welfare check on a little girl that may have attended her daycare center.
When police and Harrell arrived at the home, it appeared as if no one was there. But then they heard a little girl’s voice inside, yelling for help.
The little girl was responding to the officers calling her name. The door to the home was locked, so Harrell crawled through a window on the front porch. The moment she stepped inside the home, the daycare owner was absolutely shocked by what she saw.
Underneath the staircase was a closet. When Harrell called for the little girl once more — her voice came from behind the closet door.
“Her feet were black, her little hands were shaky. She had bit all her nails down until they were bleeding. Hair was shaved, what wasn’t had been pulled out so she had bald spots all over her head. Her face was dirty and cut up and she had bruises around her neck,” Harrell told Fox8.
Harrell immediately recognized the 5-year-old girl from her daycare center.
“Little blonde curls and the big blue eyes,” Harrell said. “There was never a day when she left and she wouldn’t say, ‘I love you miss Tracy.’”
It was unclear how long the little girl had been trapped in the closet; she had no food or water and was covered in bruises and burns.
“She clung to me and wrapped her arms around me,” Harrell said. “I had her laying here and she kept saying ‘please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me.’”
“I said did you eat breakfast this morning? And she said, ‘no.’ I said did you eat dinner last night? and she said, ‘no.’ I said when is the last time you ate and she said, ‘I don’t remember.’”
The police officers also said that there was rat poison in the closet with the abused little girl but, thankfully, she never touched it or tried to eat it.
“I hope that she gets put into a loving home and gets to be a normal little girl, not having to worry about when her next meal is coming or when a beating is going to happen or when her next burn is going to happen,” Harrell said. “Just hope she doesn’t have to know this fear ever again.”
The police arrested her parents, Adam Byrd and Crystal Carnahan; they were charged with abuse, neglect, and assault with a weapon. The 5-year-old is in custody of the Department of Social Services and will hopefully find a loving home soon.
