It’s one thing to welcome the children of your relatives into your home after a tragedy. We’ve all heard stories about family members adopting their brothers or sisters kids.
But would you take in your neighbor’s kids? How about a neighbor you barely knew?
That’s exactly what Las Vegas casino workers Tisha and Kevin Beauchmin did. It started when their neighbor Audrey asked her neighbor Tisha if she would be able to watch her three kids for the night when she went to the hospital for some tests.
Tisha, a mother of five, said it was no problem. Little did she know she would eventually try to make those kids her own. Audrey found out that she had Stage 2 terminal oesophageal and stomach cancer.
“Audrey asked Tisha to be the legal guardian for her kids,” explained Elizabeth Thames, who nominated the Beauchmins for the FOX 5 Surprise Squad. “It wasn’t much longer after that, that she passed away.”
Tisha was born in an orphanage and didn’t want those children to become orphans so she and her husband took the children in.
“I’m trying to become a foster mom so I could become their mom,” Tisha said. “I don’t want them to ever have to deal with anything that I had to deal with as a child because children deserve to be children. They’ve been through too much. They deserve a loving family and a place to call home.”
Many were astonished that the Beauchmins would take in their neighbors children since they already had five of their own.
“I don’t know anybody in this whole world who would open their heart up to these kids,” said Thames.
The only way that the Beauchmins would be able to serve as the children’s foster parents is if they created a wall to separate two bedrooms in their home and had a bed for each child. They just couldn’t afford to do that and didn’t know what they were going to do.
That’s when the Surprise Squad showed up.
The FOX 5 Las Vegas Surprise Squad and their partners helped to remodel and refurnish the Beauchmins’ home so that each child could have their own bed. They made the wall partition, refurnished the entire home, gave their 18-year-old son $1,500 toward moving into a new apartment, and gave the family a car that could seat 12.
They brought in a beautiful Christmas tree and made sure there were presents for the children underneath it. They also gave the family a year’s worth of groceries.
“It’s usually so hard to figure out how we’re going to get food,” Kevin said tearing up. “We always do it but we’re not going to have to stress about it. That’s amazing.”
Tisha says she just wants them to be a family of 10 forever.
“It’s really overwhelming someone would do this for me and my family,” she said. “I didn’t do anything too special. I would have done what anyone in my shoes would have done. I love all 8 of them. As long as they’re happy, I’m happy.”
Since the big surprise, Tisha has taken on a second job and Kevin has gotten back into law enforcement. If you’re able, you can make a donation to the family’s GoFundMe campaign here.
