When a baby is born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the disease causes significant problems.
Brittany Jackson, a Findlay mother of a 5-year-old son who suffers from SMA, explained how much difficulty her son has to move around without his special wheelchair.
“He can move his legs, he can move around, but his lower body strength he cannot bear any weight,” she explained.
As doctors explain,
“SMA involves the loss of nerve cells called motor neurons in the spinal cord and is classified as a motor neuron disease.”
And that’s exactly why children who suffer from this disease need their wheelchairs in order to move around.
Just like Brittany Jackson’s son, who is really depending on his wheelchair and cannot even go to school without it.
So, when a few days ago, the family’s SUV was stolen, Brittany and her husband, who have three children, started getting anxious, most importantly because their son’s wheelchair was in there.
The couple called the police and, luckily, a few hours later, their vehicle was found.
When they got to it, they both ran to the back of the car, where they hoped to see their son’s wheelchair, but they were unlucky.
“We ran to the back of my jeep and hoped to see the wheelchair that was not there. So, I[was] a horrific mess,” Brittany admitted.
So, the mother went on social media and she shared her story, hoping that her Facebook friends might be able to spot the young boy’s chair.
Indeed, the plea she made on social media proved helpful, since someone belonging to the community soon communicated with her and let her know where the boy’s so much needed equipment had been found.
Although 25 miles away, which was a significant road trip, the wheelchair had been found and that was the most important thing.
As the couple was told, the wheelchair had been discarded in a horse pasture in Kansas, Ohio, and they immediately drove to that spot in order to take their son’s chair back.
Indeed, when they arrived there, they checked and realized it was really theirs, but they just couldn’t explain why someone would throw away such a special wheelchair that was obviously necessary for someone else.
“Because the post was shared so many times, there was a lady in Kansas, Ohio, who thought that she had found my wheelchair. […] Whoever stole my jeep threw my son’s wheelchair in a horse pasture in Kansas, Ohio. It’s a dirty mess, looks disgusting, it’s filthy,” the mother explained.
However, the family was happy that the son’s wheelchair that he needs so much was found. At the same time, they could not explain why someone would do something like that.
As Brittany shared in a Facebook live, they would keep looking for the person who stole the jeep and threw away their son’s wheelchair in order to have them pay for it.
At least the so much needed equipment was returned to the family. Now the 5-year-old boy is happy to move around again.
