Friend surprises blind man with embroidered version of baby’s ultrasound pic so he can feel new baby
For the first time, as a blind dad to be, Nathan was able to build a mental picture of his unborn baby through touch. ❤️

When Nathan Edge and his partner Emma Fotheringham, fell pregnant, Nathan could only imagine what the scan photos would look like.

Although the dad-to-be was born with sight, he became visually impaired at the age of six and ended up losing around 80% of his vision. This meant that he wouldn’t be able to be a part of one of the most special moments of becoming a parent- seeing the scan.

But amazingly, one kind friend figured out a clever way for Nathan to be able to see his baby’s first scan- by embroidering the scan picture herself.

“I have no sight at all, so I was not able to see the scan photo, Nathan told Metro. “I missed out on that, although it was exciting to be there for it.”

Emma decided to keep her friend Deb Fisher’s embroidery idea under wraps until it was completed, meaning Nathan, who played for England’s blind football team, was taken totally by surprise when he was handed the finished product.

“I was quite emotional, it took me a few minutes to work it out,” he said. “But normal baby scans are quite difficult to work out when you can see them.”

Now Nathan and Emma had their very own copies of their baby’s first scan- something which Emma was very happy about.

The expectant mum said: “A lovely lady named Deb who is a local puppy walker for guide dogs dropped me a message. She said she was so happy for us both but sad that Nathan was unable to see our baby grow on our scan photos.”

Emma added:

“She said she had never embroidered before but would love to try and embroider all of our scans for Nathan to enable us to experience the joy of our baby boy growing together. I couldn’t believe someone could be so kind and thoughtful and knew it would be something very special for Nathan.”

Deb was overjoyed that her first attempt at embroidery had been a success, and even more pleased that Nathan would now be able to get a feel for what his daughter was going to look like.

“I did this and now I’m in tears,” Deb said. I’m no expert and this was my first try at thread embroidery. ‘I can’t draw but I can paint in thread.”

Nathan was so blown away by his friend’s act of kindness that he took to Twitter to share a picture featuring the embroidered baby scan. The Tweet soon began to gain popularity, and now has over 32.7k likes, as well as thousands of retweets.

“I have been blown away by the sort of attention it has got on Twitter,” Nathan said. “It has made a lot of people smile. Especially after the year we have all had, it’s nice.”

We couldn’t agree more. If only there were more selfless people in the world like Deb!
