Bringing a child into the world is a momentous occasion. The decision to have a baby comes with plenty of consideration and forethought. When it finally happens, we take on a wide range of new responsibilities and duties. We also find ourselves waiting for many significant moments in our children’s lives, moments that show they are growing and maturing into adulthood. One of the first major maturity milestones is a baby’s first words. Usually, the word is something that a baby would say all the time and is usually one of the two parents.
Sometimes, however, that word turns out to be something completely different.
In a clip uploaded to YouTube by user DD Renaud, two grandparents are seen holding a little baby boy.
As one does with babies, they are bouncing him gently on a knee and prompting him with questions to get him to say something. “Gabe, let’s say ‘mama,’” the grandfather says. Everyone else joins in, trying to coach little Gabe into it. Still, nothing happens. After that, everyone decides to try again. “Can you say, ‘milk?’” they ask him. Though Gabe definitely seems more interested, he still doesn’t say the word.
After a few moments, the grandfather has a somewhat unusual idea.
Once Gabe stands up and smiles, grandpa launches into his plan.
“I know what his first word’s gonna be,” he says. “Taco!” Hearing this, Gabe suddenly perks up and gets excited—it seems like he recognizes the word! After gearing up for a second, he struggles to get the word out: “Taco!” After he says it, everyone gasps and the grandparents turn the camera in shock. “He said taco!” they say in disbelief. After that, everyone starts laughing. “Did you tape that?” the grandfather asks.
If there’s any lesson to take away from this video, it’s perhaps that we shouldn’t put too much pressure on our kids’ first word.
If you’re a mom or dad hoping that your baby’s first word will be “mama” or “dada,” consider that your child’s first word could also be simply “taco.” And that’s ok! Fortunately, the family took this hilarious moment in stride—and got it captured on video for the world to enjoy again and again. Let’s face it: trying to learn a new language is hard, especially if you have nothing to go on already. Learning the word taco is a serious achievement for a baby!
