Jimmy Amisial considers himself an adventurous kind of guy, but fishing a discarded baby out of the trash bin while on holiday wasn’t exactly something he ever intended to checkmark off his bucket list.
“My life is full of fun and crazy adventures, but nothing could have prepared me for finding a four-month-old infant, covered with fire ants, in a dumpster.”

Jimmy used to volunteer at the local orphanage when he was a teenager. So when the Texas State University went home to Haiti for Christmas break in 2017, he came bearing gifts for the children.
He never imagined that he would actually wind up being a single dad to a baby that someone had apparently “thrown out with the bathwater.”

On New Year’s Eve, Jimmy was walking toward the orphanage to celebrate with the kids, but then he heard a loud commotion. He noticed a group of people who were acting weird, so he asked a woman what was going on, only to be stunned when she pointed it out to him.
“I witnessed a crying baby boy on top of a large pile of trash, but there wasn’t a single soul doing something about it.”

No one wanted to touch the poor kid because they thought he might be cursed (the belief in magic rituals is prevalent in Haiti). But all Jimmy could see was a baby who was in excruciating pain.
He was naked and crying because he had fire ants crawling all over him.
“How could they have eyes like me and yet cannot see? We were looking at the same thing, but I saw the opposite of what they saw. It was almost like God told me to pick him up, so I did!”

Unfortunately, the hospital was already closed for the night. And since there was no one else that wanted to claim him, Jimmy rushed the infant home to his mother to be cleaned and clothed.

The next day Jimmy took him to the doctor and took some legal steps to protect him.
But when he was asked to become the baby’s legal guardian, he became troubled spiritually.
After all, he was just a 22-year-old college student who only came home to visit his mom, not to raise a family.

Courage finally took over and Jimmy decided to accept the mission that God had given him. His mother helped care for little Emilio, while friends were more than happy to donate clothes, money, and lots of prayers.
It hasn’t been easy for this suddenly-dad, but he leans on his faith in God.

And whenever he felt lost, he would think about a quote from Andy Stanley to steer him back onto the right path:
“Your greatest contribution to the kingdom may not be something you do, but someone you raise.”
Jimmy has worked hard to make sure Emilio is taken care of, which meant dropping out of school so he could find a job to support them both. But it’s all working out for them in the end. A GoFundMe that’s been set up to help Jimmy officially adopt Emilio has already raised over $50K.
