Harley Harlington is a man with many titles. He is a former Marine, a single dad, and a tough survivor.
Harley is a real man, and he has proven it in over seven decades. He is tough, loving, and caring. And with that, he never voiced out his problems, so he kept them bottled inside.
Harlington is a loving father and grandfather to his children and grandchildren, He never fails to show them all his love.
He took on all of life’s struggles and pains with a smile on his face, ignoring the pain he felt.
The man still worked hard for his family even though he had health issues, which was normal given the life he lived and his advanced years.
His granddaughter Kirsten told FOX5,
“He’s been working all his life. He’s an ex-marine. He’s had a kidney transplant, and it took him forever to get that and he’s still going strong.”
Harley was a selfless man, denying himself life’s luxuries just so he could provide for his family while helping others.
So, it was time for Harley to receive a special surprise for all he’d done.
His daughter and granddaughter contacted FOX5’s Surprise Squad in the hopes of giving back to Harley and make him feel appreciated.
Monica Jackson soon reached out to Kirsten and together, made their way to Harley’s home.
They presented him with a bouquet as soon as he opened the door and after a short interview, Harley revealed he had a kidney transplant which added 25 to 3o years to his life.
“As well as running a business, at one time I had four jobs. You know, just so I could put food on the table, presents under the Christmas tree.” he shared.
Harley did a lot of driving, picking up and dropping Kirsten off at work in a beat-up van. The vehicle’s air conditioning had gone out, and its heater stopped working.
So Jackson introduced Jose Gutierrez from Sudden Impact Auto Body, who offered to fix the van’s air conditioning and heater. It was going to make a huge difference.
Gutierrez was touched and moved by Harlington’s life story.
Then the group handed Harley a red box, which contained $1,500!
He reached for a tissue to wipe his tears, saying, “Utterly speechless. I’ve never had anything like this in my life.”
At this point, both Jackson and Kirsten were crying as well.
Harley then appeared on the show, this time with Robbin his daughter, who was out of town when the group surprised her father.
When asked why Robbin reached out to FOX5, she said,
“He’s struggled and he’s gone through so much with the kidney transplant and all the doctors and moving him from Arizona to here. Throughout all of that, he was still so strong. And when the air conditioning went out in his car, I just thought that I have to do something to help him.”
When asked for advice, the wise single dad says that one should put family, especially the children, above anything else.
And also, he named his kidney “Junior”.
