Never, ever be too friendly especially when a stranger is charming and sweet.
A Johnson County mother was in a Target store doing her groceries when a stranger offered to trade a dog for her baby.
Rachel Youngs was in the baby section shopping when the woman with a dog walked up to her complimenting her baby.
Now it is quite common for strangers to do so.
But what happened next was bizarre.
The woman struck up a conversation then offered up the trade.
She asked to hold Youngs’ baby, to which Rachel obliged, but when the stranger started walking off with the infant daughter, Rachel realized something was way off.
When the woman said, “I’ll trade you my dog for your baby.”
It was no longer a joke.
Then it gets scary and weird.
The woman began to explain to Youngs that she was an experienced babysitter with a dog-grooming business.
But once she held the baby, Rachel immediately regretted the decision.
The stranger with the dog began making comments like: “Do you have a godmother? I’d love to be her godmother; I’ll split everything 50/50.”
“Just so you know, I was arrested for attempted kidnapping,” the woman continued.
And then the woman began walking away with Rachel’s baby girl.
“She just was super, super nice. And she went to the front of my cart and asked me if she could hold my daughter. Then she starts taking her out of the car seat, and she hands me her dog.”
Strange people out there.
Youngs yelled after her, saying, ‘I need my baby back, please. Give me my baby back.’”
The lady with the dog hesitated for a second, before handing over baby Waverly.
That’s when Youngs asked Target employees to call the police.
Strangely though, the police say since she let the woman hold her baby, it’s not technically kidnapping so they could do nothing about her situation.
They did say they will monitor the woman who tried to walk off with the baby, and that they know who she is.
What would you have done?
Globally, around 8 million children are kidnapped every year.
Accurate numbers are difficult to come by, but in the US, around 2,300 children are taken every single day.
There is only so much the authorities can do.
Parents have to always be on alert and take every safety measure they can, even in the comfort of their own home.
That nice, smiling stranger could have very bad intentions.
That friendly neighbor could be harboring a dark secret.
Youngs had the presence of mind to think clearly and yell at the woman to give back her baby.
Things could have gotten uglier if that woman refused.
Rachel would have every right to get physical.
Don’t ever mess with a mom.
Let’s hope the police were able to bring something out of her situation.
And perhaps that strange woman needed help too.
