Within the past few decades, technology has progressed at an alarming pace. These days, our lives are filled with ‘smart’ devices geared towards making things easier. In theory, this sounds pretty amazing— in practice? Well, there are still a few kinks to iron out…
Unlike previous generations, kids are now being raised with smart devices all around them— unfortunately, the kid “accent” is something technology has yet to master.
In an adorable video captured by Cryssy Turner, you see a toddler having a hilarious showdown against Alexa, their Amazon home assistant.
The premise behind Alexa (and other home assistants like Google Home and Echo) is simple: you ask questions or give commands and the device will respond in turn. The devices can stream music, set alarms, answer web-based research questions, and more. The best part is you don’t even have to lift a finger.
As you will see, Cryssy’s daughter has developed a love-hate relationship with Alexa.
Throughout the video, the two go head-to-head as the toddler struggles to get Alexa to play her favorite song. Clad in an adorable yellow jacket, the little girl stands in the kitchen, addressing the Alexa device on the counter.
“Alexa, play ‘Baby Shark,'” she requests.
“Baby chair,” Alexa replies in an infuriatingly monotone voice. She begins to say the selection is unavailable, but the toddler doesn’t have time for her games. “Alexa,” she repeats more sternly. “Play ‘Baby Shark.'”
“‘Sure Baby… Hold Back’ by Say Anything on Amazon Music,” replies Alexa before playing the wrong song. Now, the little girl is getting frustrated.
“Alexa! Alexa!” she yells. “Play ‘Baby Shark!'”
At this point Alexa complies, giving the toddler a sample of the song, but the little girl knows her request is still not complete.
She looks towards Mom, her eyes requesting some assistance. “Tell Alexa,” she asks Cryssy.
Finally, using an adult voice, the mother asks Alexa to play ‘Baby Shark’— and to the little kid’s overwhelming joy, the opening notes begin to play.
For the remainder of the video, the adorable girl busts out some fancy footwork to her favorite jam.
In the video’s caption, Cryssy writes:
“She tries so hard to get Alexa to play her jam. She struggled for at least 5 minutes before I even started recording. #babyshark #babygirl #persistence.”
After a bit of Googling, I’ve learned this little girl’s problem is fairly common.
Home devices have yet to master the child “accent”— much to the dismay of toddlers everywhere.
For example, in this video, a young girl from California gets downright angry that Alexa can’t understand her series of demands. You can watch it here:
Or this one, where a toddler’s innocent request returns some hilarious XXX-rated results. “Alexa, stop!” you hear a panicked father exclaim in the background.
Despite technology’s rapid progress, there’s clearly some room for improvement.
Since being uploaded to Facebook, Cryssy’s video has been shared over 230,000 times.
It’s impossible not to love the toddler’s stern determination— not to mention her celebration dance!
“Aww, she’s so cute! God bless her!”
“Alexa be tripping. This video is too cute, and she is such a little beauty.”
“The cutest thing on the internet.”
