Any tragedy that would befall us would take a toll on almost everything we do. We tend to lose hope and just give up altogether.

If you feel that way today, I beg you to read on and seek inspiration in this miracle story of how one became a walking testament to what it’s like not to give up.

The Night that Changed Everything

Yolanda Osborne Kohn got a knock on her door in the middle of the night, and it was like her worst nightmare had come to life. The police told her that her son Drew had been in a terrible car accident.

She rushed to his side and saw her son lifeless and in a coma. He had two impaired lungs, broken shoulder, pelvis, and ribs, and a traumatic brain injury. The doctors told her that he was brain dead and wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, or even wake up.

Drew’s Miracle

No matter what the doctors said, Yolanda continued to pray for her son’s recovery. And all those prayers, including family and friends who loved Drew, paid off.

After 244 days in coma, Drew became a living miracle and defied the odds. His speech pathologist in Brooks Rehabilitation, Alicia Ross, said that they were playing football on TV when they noticed in their heat mapping software that Drew was moving his eyes. It meant he was awake and following the play he was watching.

They sent him home under his mother’s care. Yolanda had no complaint. She took care of her son 24/7 and never ceased praying for him. Until one day, Drew started talking, though somewhat slurred, it was an improvement.

A Walking Testament

Since then, Drew has worked on his way to recovery. His Alicia said he recovered faster than expected and learned how to use the device to type out what he wanted to say. However, Drew didn’t feel as free as he would if he could walk again.

He spent five days a week in the rehab facility, enduring all the pain so he could walk again. His dedication and faith were a testament – a walking testament – that miracles happen. He took it one step at a time, literally and figuratively speaking.

“Drew is a walking miracle. He is a modern-day miracle. For people who have cancer, Parkinson’s, whatever it is that you have, don’t give up,” his mother, Yolanda, told First Coast News.

Drew on His Feet Again

First Coast News followed Drew’s story, and after two years, they wrote an article to update it. He finally could talk and walk again – all these wrapped in his mother’s love. Yolanda said she kept the wheelchair and every brace Drew used on his road to recovery. For her, it was a reminder of how her son has come a long way.

Drew wanted his story to become an inspiration for others who might think it is impossible to overcome what they’re going through.

“My story represents never giving up hope. All things are possible when God is in it. I just would love to tell others to never give up.”
