A lot of things in life happen when we’re not paying attention.

Because everything happens so fast, many chance encounters happen around us every day that we may not even notice. Although most of the time this is no big loss, sometimes it pays to be paying closer attention.

In a story out of San Jose, California, a chance encounter ended up saving the life of an innocent child.

For Colin Blevin, the day began like any other.

Blevin was a construction worker with Ciarra Construction reporting to the job site as usual. As he was about to pull in, he noticed something unusual—a Honda Accord was partially blocking the gate.

Even more unusual was that there was a baby sitting in the backseat.

According to Blevin, his gut told him something was wrong almost immediately:

“I put my man voice on and I’m like, ‘Hey, what’s going on here?’ What’s up with this baby?’”

Because it was scheduled to be a hot day, Blevin knew the baby needed to be somewhere cool. Still, the story got more complicated.

As he investigated, Blevin saw a man talking to a homeless woman living out of a nearby RV.

The woman, known affectionately in the area as Mama Ramirez, seemed to be trying to send Blevin a message with her body language. According to Blevin, it was clear to him that the man was on drugs of some kind.

As the man began trying to break into another car nearby, Blevin sprang into action.

Because there was no time to determine what was happening, Blevin quickly reached into the Honda Accord and pulled out the baby and the car seat. Although the situation was unclear, he said he knew that the baby was unsafe. After grabbing the baby, the man got back in the car and drove away.

As it turns out, Blevin’s instincts were right.

The baby’s name was Emiliano and had an amber alert out from earlier that same morning.

Emiliano had been kidnapped by the man earlier that morning. What Blevin had stumbled upon was the kidnapper trying to give the baby away to Mama Ramirez before making his escape. Fortunately, Mama Ramirez’s signal had been enough to signal Blevin to intervene.

After the police showed up, they took baby Emiliano safely back to the San Jose Police Headquarters, where he was reunited with his family.

Because they were paying close attention, Blevin and Ramirez were able to foil a kidnapping.

Although this story is frightening, it stands as a reminder of the power of attention. Because Blevin and Ramirez were brave and stood up to wrongdoing, Baby Emiliano was able to return to his family, safe and sound.

Thanks to their efforts, this story had a happy ending.
