The first things we learn in life, we learn from our parents.
From learning how to ride a bike to tying our shoelaces, these are the simple things that our parents taught us during childhood. As we grew older, they taught us more complex things, braiding our hair, putting on a necktie, driving, and replacing a flat tire.
Sadly, however, some kids don’t get to grow up with parents.
Either their parents died or left them when they were younger. Some are fortunate enough to be in the care of blood relatives or adoptive parents who raised them as parents should.
But what if they didn’t have anyone?
For those who didn’t really have a mother or father figure, there were many things that they needed to learn on their own.
Rob Kenney learned many basic life skills on his own or with the help of others.
Rob was one of the eight kids his father left behind.
At the young age of fourteen, he still had much to learn about growing up and being a man.
He said that he learned how to tie a necktie from his roommate when he was 20. His brothers also helped him learn about tools and repairs (like cars, plumbing, etc.) because they were handy.
He knows firsthand how difficult it is to grow up without a father.
Rob thought about all the other children, especially men, who had no father to look up to growing up.
It must be so difficult for them, right? Plus, the added pressure of passing on what they learned to their future kids.
So, Rob created his YouTube channel called “Dad, How Do I?”
On his channel, he makes short tutorial videos that might come in handy for other people out there without a dad.
He has a video on how to shave, tie a tie, and even swap car batteries. He also created a video wherein he read a bedtime story – perfect for dads with newborns.
But the most heartwarming thing about it was creating a sense of community.
his father left when he was 12, now he has a YT channel called “Dad, how do I?” to help kids who’re growing up without dads. teaching them basic tasks that you’d usually ask your dad for help on. this is the purest thing 😭 pic.twitter.com/JMKXM541xd

One person tweeted about his channel and called it “the purest thing.”
Indeed, it is.
Her tweet reached 2.1 million likes which converted to subscribers and viewers for Rob.
People expressed their gratitude and appreciation on his YouTube channel.
According to Rob, it was heartwarming but also heart-wrenching to read their comments.
Some people shared how his videos made them feel like they had a father who was teaching them. But the heart-wrenching part was when some wrote about dealing with the pain and grief of losing their father.
Rob used his YouTube channel to teach these kids basic things their dad could have.
But he also made sure that his videos were created with love.
He even posted motivational videos for his viewers and told them how proud he was of them – just like he would say to his own kids.
