As an adult, we’re expected to be busy and productive almost all the time.
It’s getting harder and harder to make a living these days and life is only getting more complex. For single people, their main concerns are simply staying on top of work, health and having a social life. For those with families, it’s all of those plus an additional array of concerns. No matter the specifics of a situation, all this pressure to be energized and active gives way to one of the world’s most common addictions.
That’s right, we’re talking about coffee and caffeine addiction.
According to USA Today, nearly 83% of adults drink coffee—that’s a lot of caffeine.
As coffee has gotten more and more popular, the stereotypes of the coffee drinker have solidified as well. There’s the artisanal coffee person who only drinks the most rarefied beans and won’t be seen at a chain coffee shop. On the other end of that spectrum is the “basic” coffee drinker, the person who can’t function without a Starbucks cup in their hand.
It’s that latter kind of coffee drinker that a video on the internet has been poking fun at.
The clip was loaded onto Instagram by social media mom Katie Stauffer.
Stauffer is known for her videos and posts about her children, specifically her adorable daughter Mila. In one particular clip, Mila takes her mom to task for her serious coffee addiction—all while spouting a wide range of coffee-related catchphrases. “Coffee is life,” she says. “A yawn is a silent scream for coffee!” Watching Mila roast (pun intended) her mom is obviously striking a chord with viewers around the world.
So far the video has been viewed more than five million times on Instagram and other outlets.
While it’s pretty clear that mom is in on the joke, it remains a pretty solid parody of coffee-related memes.
From being “basic” without Starbucks to being unable to function without a cup of joe, Mila hits all the familiar punchlines. Above all though, the video is adorable simply because of little Mila herself. For those who are fans of little Mila, Stauffer has loaded dozens of videos up on YouTube with similarly inspired rants about adult culture—but be sure to block out some time if you’re going to do a deep dive!
