Parenthood can be rough. Crying jags from the baby that just don’t seem to stop.
Explosive diarrhea that shakes even the steadiest, toughest mom with an iron-clad stomach. Health conditions and concerns that rock a parent to her core.
The first few hours after a baby’s birth are a blur filled with love and exhaustion. A lengthy, tough birth can leave a mom wiped out and being confined to a hospital bed leaves emotions raw.
Some moms don’t do well asking for help, but they’re constantly reminded by the nurses at the hospital to sleep when baby sleeps and to take care of themselves in order to be able to take care of their babies.
Mom Samantha Mravik-Miller was in the hospital with her now six-year-old son, stuck in bed, when her baby boy began crying.
Her husband slept right through the entire ear-shattering ordeal.
Poor Samantha had lost her voice after being oxygen and couldn’t summon the strength to climb out of bed or the voice to holler at her spouse. She sought the call button to beg a nurse to help her but it was too far out of reach.
“I remember having to throw an empty water bottle at him to try and wake him up to help me get our crying baby.”
So six years later when Samantha was back in the hospital with Baby No. 2, she came prepared. She was scheduled for a cesarean section and knew that she would need a helping hand even more this time around.
She called it “mom hack level 1,000.”
“Are you worried about the nights in the hospital with your newborn and dad sleeping? Well… then don’t forget one of these in your hospital bag.”
Samantha shared with Love What Matters that while picking up her house before heading out to the hospital the morning of her C-section, she had a brilliant idea. She grabbed ahold of her son’s toy Nerf gun and it dawned on her that it would be perfect!
“I thought to myself, ‘I’ll have better aim with this than a water bottle!’ Being a boy mom, Nerf guns are everywhere around here! The darts are the boys’ equivalent to glitter.”
Samantha forgot she had packed it by the time she was ready to be wheeled into the operating room for the C-section. She asked her husband to fetch something from her bag and he was taken aback when he found it.
“He said, ‘Ummm why is there a nerf gun in here?’ I said, ‘All the better to wake you with!’ He asked me why I had it and I told him it would be easier to wake him with that than a water bottle because ‘I’d have better aim.’ We left it out for the rest of the weekend and the nurses all thought it was hilarious, especially the ones who had witnessed his snoring.”
Needless to say, every time Samatha hollered at her hubby for a helping hand, he woke up immediately. Apparently he wasn’t interested in being pinged with stinging Nerf darts in the hospital room.
“After this post, I think other moms will be packing one also. Life is never predictable, and we are never in control. Choose a partner who is not only supportive but also shares your sense of humor when life gets rough.”
Luckily, Samantha’s husband got a kick out of his wife’s surprise and vowed to be a bit more alert this time around. How funny is this idea?
