Emily Johnson of Vacaville, California, and her husband, Michael, already had a son when they decided to try to have another one.
The couple had been trying for six months before they finally got a positive pregnancy test, and they were more excited than ever that they would soon have a new baby at home and that their son would have a baby brother.
As Emily’s due date was approaching, she was ready for the journey to be over. She couldn’t wait to hold the new baby in her arms, and she was convinced that her son would come into the world earlier than expected.
Indeed, a week before her due date, the woman started having regular contractions that soon started to come more and more frequently.
“Every 10 minutes or so for about two-and-a-half, three hours. So we were like ‘Oh, we’ve got plenty of time,’” she told KCRA News. “The contractions went to five minutes and three minutes and two minutes and one minute in a matter of 20 to 30 minutes, and we are like, ‘Oh, we got to get into the car, we gotta go’,” she explained.
And, although the hospital they had planned to go to for their baby’s birth was no more than five minutes away, Emily knew she would not make it that far.
As soon as they got to the car, the young mother knew that she would have to give birth to her son right there- on the grass.
“I’m just gonna get on the grass, I’m gonna be here. This is gonna be my spot,” she decided.
Luckily, Emily’s mother, who thought she was coming to babysit the couple’s older son while they would be at the hospital, arrived right when Thomas’s head was coming out.
Indeed, the grandmother helped her daughter deliver baby Thomas, while the emergency crews were on their way to the family’s property.
As soon as they arrived, the baby was already in his grandma’s hands, while Emily was finally able to relax for a moment after all that she had been through over the last hour.
“I just laid back in the grass and took a nice, deep breath,” she said.
The mother and the newborn were taken care of by the emergency crews, and they soon went home.
But, besides the special birth that life had planned for Thomas, what is also unusual is that the family has the baby’s birth now on video. In fact, they can share it with all of their family and friends.
All thanks to their doorbell camera that captured the whole thing that night. From the moment they left the house to when the baby was born, Emily and Michael can watch their baby’s birth over and over again.
Luckily, Emily was facing the right direction, as she admitted.
“I’m just thankful that I was facing that direction,” she told KCRA News. “Because otherwise I don’t think we’d be able to share the video footage with anybody.”
She also couldn’t help but chuckle over some of the details of the unusual birth story.
“I joke that I was like a cow giving birth in the field, because once I got to the hospital, I had grass clippings falling right off me and the nurses were wiping dirt off my knee and I’m like, ‘Oh, I did give birth in the lawn.'”
