You’ve seen TikTok dance challenges surface left and right but have you heard about the toddler candy challenge? Apparently, the little ones are part of internet crazes, too.
The challenge is supposed to test a toddler’s patience and obedience.
It starts with the mom or dad setting a bowl (or a piece or two) of sweet treats right in front of their toddlers and instructing the little ones not to have any until the parents come back. Typically, most toddlers are agreeable. They eagerly nod upon being told to wait but it’s what happens when moms and dads leave the room that folks are in anticipation of.

This challenge was actually inspired by a psychologist’s report.
Walter Mischel and his team at Stanford University created the Marshmallow Test to study the science of self-control in toddlers. Those who passed the test were said to have displayed willpower that promised long-term positive effects, while those who instantly helped themselves to the treat could be trained to practice more self-control and restraint.

If you’ve tried this and your toddler instantly ate the tempting treats, don’t feel bad.
It’s not always a sign of disobedience or impatience. It could simply be a case of kids being kids.
While it’s imperative to raise kids with good behavior, it’s not healthy to set extremely high expectations for both parents and toddlers alike. At the end of the day, it’s consistency and gentle, positive parenting that does the trick.

In the meantime, go ahead and enjoy watching each toddler challenge online, both the ones that ended successfully and those that ended comically. After all, nothing spells feel-good quite like little kids trying their hardest to do what they’re told.
Just like these twins who’ll definitely put a smile on your face!

The first thing you’ll notice are their sweet, angelic faces and how adorably they look, rounded elbows resting on the table in front of them. Their mom sets a bowl of what looks like M&Ms in front of each twin and tells them she’ll be right back as she has to use the bathroom. She repeatedly tells her little ones not to have any of the candy until she returns.
“Don’t eat it yet. Don’t eat it. Leave it right here, and when I come back from potty you can eat it okay? Don’t eat it. I’ll be right back.”

The little boy responds with a soft “yes” while the little girl silently studies the bowls in front of them. She moves the bowl away from her brother who consequently pulls it back and brings his face close to the candy.
But they still kept themselves from reaching into the bowls and eating the treats.

From time to time, the twins would converse with each other, seemingly about the bowls of candy in front of them but despite their mom not being around, there were still no attempts to eat the candy.

Finally the mom returns, clearly ecstatic at discovering how obedient her twins were to her instructions.
She excitedly praises them for a job well done and tells them they can finally eat the treats.

You’ll definitely laugh at how quickly the little girl has her small hand in the bowl!
(We don’t blame her, though!)
