Ever had that crappy crayon for your school supplies back then?

The school term is upon us once again and just like the year that has been, the start of the term is filled with great stories or nightmares.

One parent took her back-to-school issue to the forum site Reddit.

In one of the subreddits where you can ask if you’re in the wrong about any situation, the parent narrated the predicament that she was in.

She began by sharing some information.

She has a 9-year-old daughter who started in a new school quite recently.

At the beginning of the term, she received a list of school supplies to buy.

It’s the usual request of buying extra packs of crayons, stationary, maybe some pencils.

As the post said, “you know the deal.”

She also reiterated that she was opposed to this idea but it was also something she was willing to just comply with so she can be done with it.

However, she did something quite different.

She said that the request didn’t mention anything against labeling the materials.

She then bought personalized supplies for her daughter like notebooks and pencils with her name on them.

She shared her reasons for doing so.

“Mia is very particular about what type of stationery she likes. I’ve heard horror stories of kids’ stuff being redistributed and them ending up with crappy supplies”, she said in her post.

She also stated that the names and labels on the said items were printed or are part of the item so the labels can’t just be removed and given to another kid.

All of these things, she said, were apparently the right thing to do.

It was then that she received a “passive-aggressive” note from the teacher.

She said that when her daughter came home, she took home with her a note requesting that she stop by the school and talk to the teacher.

The teacher, it turns out, tried to pool the supplies together and had the kids pick one.

This ended up with Mia’s things being returned to her because the labels deemed them “unshareable”.

The parent also conceded that the people she asked were divided about the issue.

She was as confused as to whether or not she was the bad person in this situation.

However, people on Reddit agreed with the steps she took.

“I hated this as a kid. My parents would buy Crayola and I would somehow get the dollar tree brand.”

“Like I’m sorry Susan’s parents bought the dollar tree brand but my parents got me this and that’s what I want to use,” said one comment that agreed with her.

“My school did free school supplies donated by parents (or funds donated by parents for the school to buy the supplies that would be given for free) so if a family couldn’t afford school supplies, they could get a bag full of generic folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, etc. and people who could afford it could buy and use their own school supplies. Most of the kids at my school would trade pens and pencils anyway, but at least it wasn’t forced,” said another.

What do you think about this?
