There’s an old saying that there is nothing stronger than a mother’s love.
Our mothers are there for us when we’re little, feeding us, comforting us and making sure we’re safe. They take care of all of our needs and protect us. Still, that loving protection doesn’t wear off as we get older and more independent. Once we make it into the world and define our own identities, our families still remind us who we are.
In particular, one story out of North Carolina showed just how far a mother’s love can go.
It began as a normal day like any other for 21-year-old Semantha Bunce.
Bunce lives with her husband Paul and her two children in Charlotte, North Carolina. On this particular day, Paul was at work and Bunce was at home breastfeeding her baby son. Shortly thereafter, the unthinkable happened. Without warning, she heard loud noises as home invaders kicked her door down and entered the house with guns.
Still, the two intruders had no idea what they were getting themselves into.
As it turns out, Bunce was a National Guard combat medic—and she was able to put her training to use.
Bunce immediately ran upstairs to hide her son in the bedroom. After that, she got a gun that the family kept hidden and prepared to use it. In the ensuing moments, Bunce exchanged gunfire in her own home with the two intruders. In the exchange, Bunce was shot twice—but managed to scare the invaders away.
After the home invasion, Bunce was rushed to the hospital.
After she was hospitalized, Bunce’s friend Hollie Ritchie started a GoFundMe page to help cover her medical expenses.
The story was covered by many different news outlets that praised Bunce’s bravery and positive attitude towards a horrific situation. Ritchie serves with Bunce in the National Guard and was inspired by her friend’s actions:
“She is an amazing person, mother, wife, friend and soldier. Would do anything for anyone and would quite literally give you the shirt off of her back if you needed it.”
Although the situation was terrible, Semantha and the rest of the Bunce family are safe and getting the help they need. Above all, the story stands as a testament to the undying love that mothers have for their children—though this case is particularly extraordinary.
