How early is “too early” for piercings?
Parenting is one of the most controversial topics anywhere in the world because it considers both a parent’s agency and a child’s well-being.
One of the most hotly contested issues is piercing. For some, it is considered abusive. For others, it’s a practical choice that seemed normal.
One mother learned that it’s so much more than that, however, when she was swarmed in an internet forum.
User Leyla A posted a query in the forum Netmums.
She asked about the thoughts of other moms because she was planning to have her daughter’s ears pierced. The user admitted that the issue can elicit mixed views from other mothers but maybe she didn’t expect that her post will explode with comments.
It would’ve been okay with other parents but after she revealed that her daughter was still young enough to be breastfed, mothers swarmed on her post.
She asked for advice on aftercare and the effects of piercing on breastfeeding.
Instead, she was welcomed with posts asking why she’s okay with seeing her child go through unnecessary pain.
Others also chastised the choice saying that it tramples on the concept of consent and that some parents are using their children as fashion accessories.
Artist Hilary Duff found herself in the same situation when she posted a photo of her and her baby.
The former cast member of Lizzie McGuire posted a photo of her and her then 8-month-old daughter on Instagram. It was then that her fans noticed the stud earring o Banks’ ear.

According to USA Today, the earing was not on Banks’ ear a month before so it led people to believe that it was a new addition.
Mothers swarm the caption’s comment section.
One comment said that she cannot understand why Duff thought it was okay to have her daughter’s ear pierced as it can bring a lot of pain and discomfort to the child.
Others also threatened on unfollowing the actress while also asking her who gave Duff the consent to have Banks’ ear pierced.
Duff wasn’t the only celebrity who got the same treatment. Kylie Jenner and model Gisele Bundchen received a similar backlash back in 2018 and 2013 respectively.
While some mothers see it as abuse, others see it as a mundane decision.
One commenter on Duff’s post said that she had major issues with her parents but none of them involved having her ears pierced.
Others also said that the practice has been done for years and that it was not as painful as other mothers thought it would be.
The practice is also not exclusive to the west.
Other societies such as Latin America, African American, and Middle East Asian households pierce their baby’s ears at an early age. They believe that the younger the child, the less painful the procedure would be.
Meanwhile, after the torrent of comments and ignited conversations, user Leyla A conceded to those against the piercing. She said she will not undergo the procedure with her child and will just wait until she gets older.
