Mother of identical twins gives birth a year later to another set of identical twins
When she saw the ultrasound...to say she was shocked was a serious understatement.

1 in 250 pregnancies results in a set of twins.

And for identical twins, it’s around 3 to 4 in every 1,000. The odds are definitely low so when Britney Alba and her husband Frankie had twins, they never thought it would happen for a second time.

Alba, an elementary school teacher, and her husband, a firefighter had Luka and Levi. They were both excited to raise their twin boys but all of that changed just six months after.

Britney’s experience was almost like déjà vu.

She had her ultrasound and it was revealed that she has not one, but two babies. They couldn’t believe it a first but their OB confirmed they were having twins again.

The only difference is that her current pregnancy is highly risky. Luka and Levi are known as “Mo-Di” twins or monochorionic-diamniotic twins.

This means they share the same placenta but have different amniotic sacs.

Her second set of twins is “Mo-Mo” twins.

Monochorionic-monoamniotic twins are risky because they share the same placenta and amniotic sac. This type of twin pregnancy accounts for less than 1% of all births in the US.

“Because of this, our pregnancy is considered more high risk due to the potential of cord entanglement.” Britney said in her Facebook post, “When the babies become viable (24 weeks) the risk of cord entanglement increases.”

She was just 25 weeks down the road when she was admitted to the hospital.

Britney stayed in the High-Risk Obstetrics Unit of the University of Alabama at Birmingham for more than 50 days.

She recalled that the experience was nerve-wracking since she’d be away from her boys for a long time. However, with the help of her family and friends, the boys were well taken care of.

Britney delivered her twin girls after 32 weeks of pregnancy.

The twins, Lydia and Lynlee, stayed at the hospital for a month. Fortunately, the whole family was reunited right before December of last year.

The couple knows that raising twins, and two sets of them, takes hard work. But they are confident that they’ll manage especially when Lydia and Lynlee defied the odds.

“People gawk at us when we’re out in public. I used to get stopped all the time when it was just Luka and Levi — you know, people asking, ‘Are they twins?’ Now it’s like a circus,” Alba said, as quoted by TODAY. “Everyone wants to get a look!”

People also shared their thoughts and support for the couple.

“My parents had two sets of twins. Me in ‘64, girls in ‘65, boy and girl in ‘66. Best childhood ever. I still remember my Dad counting us before we went anywhere. I know it wasn’t easy for them. Enjoy. It’s the best.” Recalled one.

“That’s amazing and expensive, oh my goodness sounds like no sleep,” said one, reminding the challenges of parenthood. “Good job parents! You’re doing a great job raising so many children!”
