During tough times, we all need to be reminded that we are stronger together. The past few years have been incredibly tough on everyone and having an uplifting story like this is what we all need. We are all human and in this together, after all!
A professor at Lincoln University has ended up on the news after doing something incredible.
The professor had an interaction with a 21-year-old student that went viral. It’s not hard to see why. Imani Lamarr is the student from Lincoln who had the interaction.
“I’ve always wanted to go to an HBCU. So, I decided what’s better than the first, so I chose Lincoln,” – Imani Lamarr
Two years ago, she had a class with Dr. Aqeel Dix in the school’s health sciences department. It was there she had a touching moment.
Imani had just taken a semester off when she had to give birth to her son.
The birth was a tough one since it had come prematurely. Her little boy had to spend months in the NICU to make sure he was stable and healthy enough to come home. During that time, she wasn’t able to interact with her own boy.
“It was really hard. Every day going to the hospital, seeing him and not being able to help him, it was hard,”
When Christopher Murphy, the man Imani had named for her father, wasn’t able to watch the baby one day, Imani didn’t think she would be able to go to class.
Reaching out to her professor, she explained her situation. She couldn’t find a babysitter and as a result, she was going to miss class so she could care for her little boy. The professor’s response? No.
Dr. Dix flat out told her “no”!
“‘No.’ He told me no. And I was just looking at him like, no I can’t miss class? I don’t have nobody to watch my baby,” she said.
But, it wasn’t out of anger that Dr. Dix said no, it was out of care! Dr. Dix knew that he would NEVER have one of his students miss class because they didn’t have proper child care.
“I’m not going to have one of my students miss my class because they have no one to watch their child. That’s just not an option for me,” said Dix.
Imani did as he suggested and brought her boy to school!
It wasn’t without reservation, however. She was nervous about him being a distraction and how he would react. The professor still didn’t care – he ended up holding the baby while he walked around!
“That’s my character. I don’t mind helping my students wherever they need me,” he said.
For Imani, it was a huge help. Being able to go to class helped her keep her grades up and reach the goals she had planned for her life, even with her little boy!
“I never thought that it would come to that, and to have somebody who’s there for me…who really cares … it meant a lot,” she said.
