It is one of the most devastating, heartbreaking, and helpless feelings when one of our pets goes missing. People form such deep and connected bonds with their fur babies, that most of us can’t even imagine our lives without them. Sadly, for a boy named Carter, he momentarily had to feel that devastation and loss.
Carter’s beloved pet dog Piper ran away from home – his family had placed the pug in the backyard and it ended up escaping.
Of course, the entire family was upset, but it was Carter who was completely overwhelmed and inconsolable. When Carter turned 12 years old, Piper was his birthday gift – so the two had gotten very close and the dog meant a lot to the young boy. So, the family banded together and decided they were going to do everything they could to try and find Piper and bring her home.
For days, Carter and his family scoured their neighborhood, posted on a social media, printed out flyers, and anything else you could possibly think of to try and find the lost pooch. Unfortunately, days turned into weeks – with no sight of Piper.
After almost giving up all hope that they would find their dog, April Licata, Carter’s mom, received a phone call from the Genesee County Animal Shelter.
After hanging up the phone, April was in complete shock. They had found Piper. She hopped in the car and drove over to the shelter to confirm that it was indeed their family dog. April took to Facebook to share the news.
“I was truly shocked. We had all resigned ourselves to the reality that she probably wouldn’t come back. Lo and behold, it was her! Seeing her little tail wag as she came out from the back of the Genesee County Animal Shelter where she had been so well taken can of, I lost it!!”
During this amazing time, Carter and his sister Natalie were spending time with their father. This gave April the perfect idea – to surprise her son with this incredible news when he would least expect it.
April knew that she would be picking Carter up from school the next day and decided to have a very special surprise guest in the front seat – Piper!
Like any good mom, April had the camera rolling as she pulled up to the school with Piper the pug in tow. The adorable black dog has bows on her collar, perfect for the surprise she’s about to give! That’s when Carter walks out of the school’s front door…Piper’s excitement is already starting to overflow she lays eyes on her favorite human.
The second Carter realizes that Piper is sitting in the front seat, he completely freezes in shock – then, the tears flow.
“This video is no doubt the embodiment of that! It’s so amazing to see the love, and honestly the video says more than any words I could write. My son loves his dog so much, was sick while she was gone, and tonite she’s sleeping next to him again,” April shared on Facebook.

I can’t even!Edited story for the curious! On November 18, we let our pug, Piper, out to go potty, and she didn’t come back when we called her. It had been a long two and a half weeks for my oldest two children, Carter and Natalie, thinking they would never see their puppy again. Piper was a very special gift for Carter’s 12th birthday: he had always wanted a black pug since he spent his baby years with another pug he loved very much -Oliver- who had to go live with another family while his baby brother was sick. We posted and shared and talked to neighbors, news venues, and community groups but as the days passed, our hope waned. But then, amazingly we got a message this Monday night that a dog that looked like Piper had been picked up and taken to the animal shelter. I was truly shocked. We had all resigned ourselves to the reality that she prolly wouldn’t come back. Lo and behold, it was her! Seeing her little tail wag as she came out from the back of the GeneseeCounty AnimalShelter where she had been so well taken can of, I lost it!! Carter and Natalie were out of town for a few days with their dads family, and so I hoped to make their reunions special. This video is no doubt the embodiment of that! It’s so amazing to see the love, and honestly the video says more than any words I could write. My son loves his dog so much, was sick while she was gone, and tonite she’s sleeping next to him again. What a Christmas miracle for our family and thank you to everyone who helped bring Piper home ❤️
