Officer Nicholas Quintana, a member of the North Las Vegas Police Department, was having lunch when he got a call that sent chills down his spine.
So he got in his car and drove to Osaka Pearl Street. A woman who reportedly shot her husband had been arrested. The couple’s five children were all present in the house during the crime.
“Trying to enjoy my lunch and this urge, this abrupt urge, that’s the best way I can describe it, came and I ended up going to the call,” he told FOX5.
The kids, aged 6 to 17, lost their parents in a horrible incident.
“Wow. That’s sad. That’s extremely sad because now these kids are going to go to Child Haven,” he said.
Quintana felt bad for the kids. He sort of understood their situation since he lost his father at the hands of another family member. The cop decided to go the extra mile for the kids.
He wanted to foster all of them.
“These thoughts like, ‘Hey, take the kids in,’ and I’m like, ‘What?’” he remembered thinking.
He told his wife, Amanda, about the incident and how he wanted to take the kids. Quintana knew the siblings would be separated under the foster care system.
Amanda was reluctant but he convinced her to meet the kids. Quintana hoped his wife would fall in love with the kids, and she did!
So 3 days later, the couple drove to Child Haven, where his wife met the kids. 2 days later, they drove home with the children.
“I look at the kids and I say, ‘Hey, look, the reason why we’re here is because I had a thought,” Quintana recalled.
“I’d like to take every single one of you. I’d like to take you in our home.’
“The 16-year-old couldn’t believe it. ‘Really?’ and I said, ‘Yeah,’ and of course, the oldest one says, ‘All of us?’ and I said, ‘Every single one of you.’”
The Quintanas were now a family of seven. The new setup required adjustment, causing the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association set up a GoFundMe for the family.
They’ve now exceeded their goal of $60,000 with $70,174!
And as challenging as their new situation is, Quintana is happy with the decision.
“I think about every single last one of them from the oldest to the youngest,” he said. “Now, I’m not just thinking about these decisions for my wife, now, I’m thinking about it for my wife and our kids, our kiddos now.”
The couple even enrolled in fostering classes to earn their fostering licenses and receive financial help. They currently use their own money for all the expenses.
The Quintanas are currently adjusting while enjoying every moment with the children. They do need help. You may donate to their GoFundMe. It’s a learning process and they need all the support they can get!
