Many parents rely on buses to bring their kids to school daily, trusting they will get their children to school safely and in one piece.
School bus-related accidents happen regularly, with as many as 17,000 school bus-related injuries occurring each year.
Most injuries are bruises and minor scratches from getting on and off the bus or roughhousing.
However, some injuries are more serious, including head traumas or sprains, even deaths related to school bus injuries.
Fortunately, the story we’re about to share does not fall into this category, despite the dramatic video footage seen in the news.
In Milwaukee, a bus driver saved more than thirty students from their burning school bus.
The bus driver was also eight months pregnant.
Imunek Williams was driving her school bus to Milwaukee Science Academy, and they were only a few blocks away from their destination when she noticed an odd smell and smoke.
She tried to radio dispatch, but relaying what was happening was a challenge.
“I could barely get what I was trying to say out because of the smoke was hitting me in the face and my eyes so I was just like, ‘Okay, forget the radio. I’ll just get the kids off the bus,” she told TMJ4 News.
She then stopped the bus and got the kids off instead of waiting for help to come.
When leaving the bus, she double-checked to make sure no one was left behind.
“I think that’s what it was. My mommy instincts kicked in really fast,” Imunek shared.
She also said, “I was the last person off. Once I got off, I turned around and I just seen flames.”
As of writing, there was no official reason yet for the fire.
The Milwaukee Police are currently investigating what happened and reports that there were no signs of suspicious activity.
Imunek also said, “Of course, I wanted to make sure that I was safe, baby was safe. If it was my kid on the bus, I would’ve wanted the bus driver to act the same way that I did.”
Fortunately, everyone who was on the burning bus came out safe and sound.
Because of the incident, Imunek suffered from smoke inhalation but she and her baby are now doing well.
“Everyone’s okay so that just makes me happy,” she said.
Thanks to Imunek’s quick thinking and bravery, no one was injured in this accident.
While this story could have gone horribly wrong, Imunek was able to help everyone to safety before the fire on the school bus spread.
We are grateful to all the school bus drivers who safely transport millions of children across the country every day!
Many parents take it for granted, but these school bus drivers take on the important responsibility of ensuring that their passengers get to school safely.
Thankfully, there are drivers like Imunek who truly care about their young passengers and put the children’s welfare before their own.
