Finding affordable and trusted child care services while we work is one common dilemma for parents.
We also have to face the fact that child care services don’t come cheap.
Then the pandemic started. Many people lost their jobs and found it hard to support their families.
Some big corporations can afford in-house childcare services for their employees. It’s one of the perks of being employed in multimillion companies.
You don’t often see in-house childcare services being given by small businesses, right?
One South Carolina business showed everyone that it’s possible to help and support their employees by providing child care services for their employees with children.
According to its owner, McGee Scot-Irish Pub is more of a restaurant where families come to dine and bond.
It’s a kid-friendly restaurant, and their latest addition to this awesome place is a closed-off room where their employee’s kids can stay.
The special room also has a licensed child care provider that takes care of the children while their parents work.
How cool is that?
“I mean, honestly, without them, I don’t know where I’d be working,” fry cook Summer Rochester told in her interview with FOX 5 News.
Rochester decided to apply for a position at McGee’s because of her 2-year-old son, Jameson.
“I was paying $600 a month for child care so that got pretty rough on us,” Rochester explained.
It’s true. $600 a month is not easy. It’s like working to pay for child care alone.
Imagine how she felt when she found out about McGee’s free child care for their employees?
Aside from that, they hired a licensed child care worker for the kids – all for free!
This means a lot for employees like Rochester.
The owners of McGee knew the hardships of their employees. They may not have a million-dollar company, but they have a kind heart.
“I don’t think people should have to choose between having a family and having a career,” said Dixie Benca, one of McGee’s co-owner.
An employee who has a child has to choose. Would it be career or family?
A hard choice for all of us, but we have to choose. For the staff of McGee, the free child-care service offered by their employer is heaven-sent.
The initial plan was to add child care as an experiment. Over time, they have proven it to be a huge help for their employees.
One of their employees, expediter Bonita Russel, has a 12-year-old son named Jayden.
“I’ve seen servers, you know, call and say, ‘I just can’t get a babysitter, so I can’t come in.’ So this has really been a blessing,” Russel told Fox 5.
It is indeed a blessing for McGee’s employees.
However, the company needed to abide by the city guidelines when it comes to its child-care setup.
According to South Carolina rules, the children are not allowed to stay for more than four hours.
That’s why the management decided to offer shorter shifts. Still, it’s a win-win situation.
We’re hoping more companies will see this and get inspired to do the same.
