An unattended child destroyed over a thousand dollars worth of make-up, which sparked quite the controversy among parents online.

It’s probably one of the worst things you can see if you’re shopping inside of a cosmetics store: a completely ruined makeup display.

Brittney Nelson’s heart skipped a beat when she came across a devastated makeup panel in her local Sephora store. The display covered all kinds of eye shadows, products and powder and it was just completely ruined.

Brittney then remembered that she saw a mom and her young child suspiciously rushing out of the store.

She realized that it was most likely the small child who had made such a mess. Brittney figured that the mom left her child unattended for a little while, which was more than enough time for the kid to destroy the makeup palette.

The total estimated cost of all the ruined makeup products and cosmetics is around $1,300.

The woman then immediately notified the staff, who all remained very professional. She says that they “calmed down their panic-mode faces” quite quickly, and the employees were able to clean up the mess and the display.

Frustrated, angry and feeling sorry for the store staff, she wrote a heartfelt post on her Facebook page when she got back home. According to the woman, the damage looked “100X worse in real life.”

Brittney didn’t expect, however, that her message would spark quite some controversy online.

“$1300 of Make Up Forever eye shadow destroyed at Sephora tonight due to a small child. I’m sure he/she thought they were like finger paints and had no idea how naughty they were being. Tons of destroyed product and pissed Sephora cast members are a not a happy place to be,” she wrote.

In the next paragraph, she asks moms not to take their smaller children into makeup stores, because chances are that something could go wrong. Brittney does realize that sometimes there’s no other option than to bring your kids, but she shared a ‘hands in pockets’ rule and guideline as a tip to parents for situations like those.

“Mammas, please shop for your makeup without your tiny humans. It’s not fun for you…or them…or the expensive product. Anna Heath and I about passed out when we saw this atrocity. Being me, I’ve needed to bring Allie into many makeup stores as she’s grown and had a strict ‘hands in pockets’ rule for her and a strict 10-minute rule for me. It was very helpful so if you must take your kiddos makeup shopping I suggest trying it.”

The photograph she shared on her Facebook page went viral, and the comments – both positive and negative – started pouring in.

It appears that the internet was extremely divided about Brittney’s post. Some agreed with her, and think that it’s always the parents’ responsibility to make sure children behave inside of a store and don’t destroy any property. A lot of people shared Brittney’s frustration and called the mom “careless” and “self-absorbed.”

However, plenty of people criticized Brittney’s post as well. Some of them feel that the woman is “mom-shaming” for no good reason and figured that if the child did something wrong, it would be the responsibility of the employees to step in.

Brittney herself was really surprised to see that her post has been the source of quite some controversy.

“I woke up to the internet mob of insanity because of my one cranky post,” she said to Insider. “I honestly don’t think I said anything 99% of people don’t think anyway so I’m not that devastated by the hurricane of it.”

She does want to emphasize that she had no intention “mom-shaming or kid hating in the least” and feels sorry if she’s offended anyone with her original post. Brittney did mention, however, that a destroyed makeup panel is something she sees quite often and should be avoided.

“I’ve seen messed up testers a gazillion times throughout the years from tiny humans,” she told. “If I do see a kid doing that in a store I will just offer to help the mom out. That’s what us moms do!” she concluded.
