It’s natural for parents to feel proud and boast about their baby’s intelligence. But how can you tell if your child is truly a genius? The following signs may be a very good indicator:
Your Baby Has Great Focus
Babies and children in general have the attention span of a goldfish. They’re so easily distracted!
A baby is special if they stay focused on a task for a longer period of time, like more than 15 minutes. This is a sign of intelligence, especially if the child shows this behavior before 6 months of age.
If a baby gravitates towards puzzles and blocks, choosing to spend long periods of time figuring them out, motivate them.
Encourage your child when they show interest in pictures in bedtime storybooks. Involve them as much as possible.
Your Baby Likes Problem Solving
If you see signs of intelligence from your child then don’t expect them to give up easily. That ability to focus comes with exceptional problem solving skills.
So if you keep the cookie jar on a high shelf thinking that they’d be safe, your little one will find a way to get those cookies.
So redirect their need to solve problems by setting aside easy challenges to solve throughout the day.
For example:
Make a mini maze out of pillows or a pillow fort that they need to get out of.
Place a toy in the middle of a maze then ask them to find it as quickly as they can. Cheer them on as they navigate their way through.
Do note that children exhibit problem solving skills as a result of reaching developmental milestones.
An advanced child will show these skills much earlier than others.
They Enjoy Alone Time
If you find your child preferring solitude then chances are they might be intelligent since this is contrary to how children often are.
Kids are social beings and usually don’t want to be left alone. However, intelligent babies are content playing by themselves.
They can even prefer the company of adults or older kids.
Intelligent children do this for slightly more advanced emotional and intellectual stimulation.
Let them interact with others as long as they are in safe company.
Do encourage them to play with their peers, but don’t push them to interact with others if they don’t want to.
A Good Sense Of Humor
If you’re child knows how to have a good laugh, life is going to be easier regardless of their IQ.
But a sense of humor also reveals intelligence.
The ability to understand and return jokes is associated with abstract thinking.
So if your little one is trying to make you laugh, don’t get upset, but instead engage with them and laugh along.
They Are Alert
Intelligent children will display high levels of alertness. They are very aware of their environment and loved ones.
These kids can recognise and bond with family members and close friends, or even strangers they come in contact with on a regular basis.
If your child likes prolonged eye contact, then they are observant of their surroundings.
For babies just a few months old, it means they learned to coordinate their eyes already. Holding eye contact at a very young age is a sure sign of intelligence.
As your child gets older, look for more signs of intelligence.
They Visualize And Draw
If your little one is artistically inclined, then you have a gifted child, since gifted children are information collectors.
If you and your child visit certain places, see if he can draw them in detail without having to look at a picture.
Scientists officially named this ability Eidetic Memory.
This type of memory is very rare with only 2% to 10% of children possessing this ability. It occurs in adults far less often too.
They Hold Eye Contact For Long Periods Of Time
When you’re out in public and a baby stares at you for a few minutes, it simply means that the child is smart.
If a baby likes prolonged eye contact, then they are aware of their environment and alert to their immediate surroundings.
Babies just a couple of months old can learn to coordinate their eyes.
This kind of awareness at a young age signals that your child is developing rapidly, since gifted children are usually more awake and alert.
They Speak A Lot And Quickly
If your child has a fast speaking rate, varied vocabulary, and the ability to join in adult conversation then he is gifted.
That includes the ability to read at an early age too.
Most children start speaking at the age of 2. Gifted 2 year old kids can frame complex phrases.
In rare cases, children learn to speak much later. Scientists think these children may have Einstein Syndrome.
It was named after Albert Einstein. He was unable to communicate coherently before the age of 5.
They Are Social Butterflies Who Also Love Spending Time With Adults
It’s common for children to get reprimanded for being social and chattery, but that just means they are two steps ahead of their peers.
Children with advanced development like to converse with those who are older than them.
They often gravitate towards deeper conversations on interesting topics instead of just playing with kids their own age.
Though they still have friends of their own age group.
If your little one is a genius, then they have high levels of social intelligence.
It is easy for them to build relationships with the people around them.
They Are Susceptible And Emotional
Being emotional and sensitive is a good thing. Research shows that emotional intelligence in children is connected to their intellectual abilities.
If your child is sensitive to the emotions of others and themselves, then they may have high emotional intelligence and even high intellectual intelligence.
It’s common for children with great skills to be neglected and leave them susceptible to emotional disorders.
Their nervous system can get overwhelmed with all that information resulting in a strong reaction to the situation.
