When Alison Johnson set up the crib for her twins, Caleb and Libby, she would have never thought “in a million years” that the set up was dangerous.
It was so dangerous that her son could have hung himself had she not checked on him.
It’s a truly horrifying situation no parent should ever have to experience which is why Alison took to Facebook to warn other parents.
“I have a lot of friends that have twins or kids close in age that may have a similar setup, so I wanted to share something VERY scary that happened today. This morning I put Caleb down for his nap. Shortly after he started to cry,” she wrote.
“After a few minutes, I went in to check on him. He had climbed out of his crib and was stuck between his crib and Libby’s crib. His body fit through, but his head wouldn’t. He was using every ounce of energy he had to hold himself up by his little arms. If they had given out, he would’ve just been hanging there by his head.
The situation could have turned out to be a lot more tragic if Alison hadn’t checked up on her babies.
“What’s even more scary is that like many moms, generally use nap time as an opportunity to shower. Had I done that today and checked on him after five minutes, he would have literally hung himself. When baby proofing, I never in a million years would have seen this as a potential danger,” she said.
“Please consider sharing this post in case someone you know may have a similar setup. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to think of what the outcome could have been today. I’m still totally shook up over it and don’t think the vision of him stuck there will ever leave my head.”
This poor woman must have been absolutely terrified.
What she found most disturbing is that this crib setup is shown all over the internet.
“If you search on Google or Pinterest, almost all the inspiration photos are set up the way we had it with no warning. Even when researching about baby proofing, nothing is mentioned about this,” she told Love What Matters.
“I literally received 100’s of messages from other twin moms thanking me because they had their nursery set up the same exact way and have since changed it. I feel 100% that by sharing our story we have saved a life, that’s all that really matters.”
Alison’s post ended up going viral and was shared more than 52,000 times.
“Even moms with one baby should be careful because you often see a dresser or a changing table nearby,” Johnson told TODAY. “It wouldn’t even have to be two cribs. We had already lowered his mattress as far as it goes and he hadn’t been able to climb out up until that point.”
Alison said she was surprised with the overwhelming reaction her post got, most of which was positive.
“It’s worth the few negative comments if we possibly saved a life with this warning,” she said. “Honestly, it was traumatizing to have that image stuck in my head.”
