A selfless gift from a son to his parents.
Pavin Smith knew exactly what gift to give his parents for Christmas. They had sacrificed so much for him throughout his 21 years of life and he wanted to show his gratitude. It just so happened that Pavin had recently been signed to the Arizona Diamondbacks and offered a very generous sign-on bonus of $5 million.
A heart of gold and money to spend.
With this windfall of cash, one would expect Pavin to go out and buy something for himself. Perhaps a new sports car or a luxurious vacation home. Pavin’s immediate thought was the well-being of his family.
A happy home…paid in full.
The 21-year-old made the decision to surprise his parents by paying off their remaining mortgage. He made sure to video their reaction when they opened his letter on Christmas. The realization of what their son had done for them made it difficult to hold back their emotion.
Tears of joy.
In the 2017 video, Pavin’s parents read their son’s letter out loud but have to stop when they realize what an amazing thing he has done. They are completely overcome with emotion. The letter read – “Thank you for raising me in a good home filled with love…because of all the sacrifices you’ve made to get me where I am I want our family home to be yours.” – Pavin Smith YouTube – Inside Edition
Baseball dreams and a parent’s pride.
Pavin’s hard work and passion for baseball led him to become the seventh overall pick in the draft. Pavin knew how instrumental his parents were in making his dreams possible and he thanked them in a big way.
He took that burden away from his parents.
After hearing his mom, Pam, talk about their dreaded mortgage payment, Pavin knew he could alleviate the stress by paying the entire amount. Most of us would do the exact same if we were able. It’s amazing that this young man thought about it at such a young age.
“I just think that takes an incredible amount of maturity for a 21-year-old, but it doesn’t surprise me. That’s how he’s lived his life. That’s how he was brought up. That’s the values that he has.” – Brian O’Connor, Smith’s baseball coach at the University of Virginia – en.newsner.com
Pavin looked on with a smile.
While his parents were reading the letter on Christmas morning, Pavin is seen in the video smiling and watching their reaction. You can tell he is super excited for them to find out their surprise. He is a truly thoughtful son and giving human being. He is an inspiration for anyone who has someone in their life who has helped them. You don’t have to pay off a mortgage to tell someone how much they have loved and supported you. The message is just as important as the gift.
