Most men dream of being a father one day. It can be scary as heck, but many men consider it the proudest moment of their lives.
For Evgeny Anisimov, being a dad came with a new challenge.
His son was born with Down syndrome, which caused a disagreement between him and his wife.
It was no small disagreement either.
Their son Misha’s condition wasn’t something his wife wanted to deal with.
They didn’t know about Misha’s condition until the hospital told them.
They expected typical news to return from the nursery, but things did not go like a typical childbirth this time.
Evgeny’s wife wanted to give Misha away to foster care.
She didn’t want to raise a child with Down syndrome.
She believed caring for a child with this condition would be too financially and emotionally intensive for her.
But he’s still your child, isn’t he? The whole thing seems pretty harsh.
Evgeny was also surprised by the diagnosis, but he didn’t follow the same train of thought as his wife.
He refused to sugarcoat his feelings and called his wife’s proposal “inhumane.”
Good on him for standing up for his son.
What’s the point in wanting a child if you’re going to abandon them for not being the way you wanted?
It’s not like Misha chose to be born with Down syndrome.
He and his wife separated over the disagreement.
Now, Evgeny would step up to be the father Misha needed.
The now-single father admitted to initially crying over the news of his son’s Down syndrome.
He knew very little about the condition and thought it meant the worst.
But since learning that Down syndrome is nothing worth crying over, Evgeny has become a model father to Micha.
“I lost my wife, but I am happy with the changes. My son is a very good and open kid like every other kid of his age, he loves me and it shows.” he said about his new life as a single father to a child with Down syndrome
Now he and Misha are the happiest they’ve ever been.
They go to parks, carnivals, malls, and swimming pools together.
He wants nothing more than for people to grow from the stigma of Down syndrome like he did.
For the sake of every kid out there like Misha.
“I want all the articles about Mishka and me that are being published now to convey that idea to society and instill it.” he said
What do you say about being a voice for people with special needs like Misha’s dad?
It’s not that hard and can mean the world to some people.
In a world where everything is made for people like you and me, it’s time we acknowledged how we could make it fits people like Misha in too.
