A mother’s worst fear is losing her child. And in 2003, Edrea Espinoza almost thought this fear had come to life.
The woman woke up in so much pain and had to be brought to the hospital. She has been carrying her baby for seven months at the time.
Upon reaching the hospital, Edrea’s world shattered when she found out that the child inside her was declared dead by the doctors. She was going to deliver a stillborn and it broke her heart into pieces.
When her baby was taken out, the doctors attempted to bring her back to life.
They were doing everything they knew to make sure that the child lived, but it was all to no avail. Edrea’s child was lifeless, and they could not do anything to save her.
Edrea was not religious by any means, but she decided to have her daughter baptized while carrying her in her arms. She did not have any name prepared for her baby and decided later on to call her Aiyana.
During an episode of Oprah, she shared:
“That was the first time I talked to God in a long time. And I just asked him to please take care of her.”
From that moment forward, amazing things happened.
As she was still in her mother’s arms, the little baby started to breathe. Edrea saw this and immediately alerted the doctors and nurses.
The medical professionals promptly took the child and gave her oxygen. They were amazed that she breathed on her own, but she was not breathing for so long that they feared she might be in danger still.
Little Aiyana was not breathing for about 65 minutes before she finally took her first breath.
The doctors did a brain scan to see if the newborn’s brain was functioning despite the very long time that Aiyana did not breathe oxygen. Their fears came true after seeing the results of the scan.
“She was not moving much. Not responding to anything. She had an EEG done, which measures brainwave activity,” shared Dr. Tony Solomay.
The results of Aiyana’s EEG were quite horrible. Statistically, the doctors thought that with the result, Aiyana would never be able to walk, sit up, or talk.
The doctors advised Edrea and her family that her baby had suffered severe brain damage.
The doctors recommended that Aiyana be removed from life support. The baby had anywhere between an hour and a day to live, and this absolutely shattered Edrea’s heart.
On that same day, Aiyana’s life support was removed.
Everyone thought that the little one would pass away, but she had more surprises for everyone.
When her life support was disconnected, the doctors could not believe what they were seeing. Aiyana was breathing on her own!
But again, the doctors did not want the family to hold on to false hopes. Even if Aiyana was breathing, she was not responding to touch. But then the next day, the little baby would grab the fingers of whoever tried to touch her.
Doctors said she needed to consume food to live, and little Aiyana developed a suck.
Truly, Aiyana was defying the odds and she was making everyone in that room amazed with her surprises.
Every passing day was a wonder for every medical practitioner who saw Aiyana. Her story of life is quite inspiring and truly a miracle. Fifteen days after she was born, Aiyana was brought home to a family excited to see her.
Edrea almost lost her child, but God had other plans.
